Commuting - Manhattan's East Side

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm about to move from the west side to the east. Near the UN. Are there any entrances/exits to the East River Bikeway between 34th and 83rd? Thanks.

Sadly, No. The East River MUP doesn't exist in that part of town. It takes a rather long detour around the UN and Sutton Place, you have to use either 1st or 2nd depending on whether you're heading up or downtown. There was at one time an entrance around 62nd? heading uptown but there is a lot of construction for the FDR in that area at the moment. And as I haven't been training for the Marathon in a couple years, I'm a bit out of touch with the part of the MUP that runs from the Queensboro to the Triboro.
I do ride southern portion down to the Seaport from the Queensboro several times a week, and can tell you that it's not all that pleasant from 34th to 23rd either, they didn't plan it very well to get around the Waterside Plaza apartments and the Water Club, you have to merge in with the tunnel traffic coming off the FDR.
That said, once you actually get on the MUP, it's a really nice ride/run/walk whether you're south of 23rd or north of the 60s, more than worthly of the hassle of the crazy bits in the middle.
The NYC bike map shows the entrances to the MUP, @ 80th, 78th, 63rd... PDF available @ http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/bike/cwbm.shtml
I work over on York and have biked/walked the MUP quite a bit. I usually use 1st or 2nd more often when I need to get somewhere fast. The MUP is a bit narrow in places (especially in the 60s/70s) and there are stairs @ 78th.

The entrance at 63rd is under construction so you'll have to walk down stairs instead of ride down the missing ramp. I believe there's another entrance at 71st in addition to the ones mentioned above. Also, to continue north of 86th, you need to walk up stairs w/ your bike.
