One that fits you head...
BTW I am not being sarcastic. Helmets are a personal thing. Go try a few on. :)
I like the way Giro's fit, but I just wanted some feedback. Should have asked something more along the lines of which helmet people think is the most durable. Thanks for the quick reply
Honestly they all meet the certain safety standards I don't remember the name of the safety standard off-hand. Most durable is probably a full face helmut but, they are not suitable for all riding.
The cheapest that doesn't have G.I. Joe or feel like my head is beeing eaten by a big white blob. :p
I just can't bring myself to spend 80 bucks on a piece of cast styrofoam...

Plus the way you ride it'll be busted in half in no time!

I've destroyed 3 helmets, two on the bike and one on an old IT 175. Let me assure you that you're far better off spending money up front on a good helmet, than spending it on a deductable for insurance.

A helmet is also a lot cheaper than fixing a crushed skull... well, not here in Ontario because OHIP pays for it.. but ummm, you get the point! :)
Joe
Well thanks alot for the replies and good info

When it comes to cross-country helmets a $40 is going to protect you every bit as well as the $150 one by the same company. The difference between them isn't protection, its styling.
This is of course not true with the full-faced helmets these guys are talking about. I definately wouldn't mind spending the extra bucks on a good full faced. They're not designed to crumble when you hit them. In that case, its an investment.

Giro's are great helmets overall - at least they fit well for me. As far as durable goes...well, I hope I don't have to find out anytime soon. As soon as any helmet is involved in an impact, it has to be replaced but all helmets on the market have to meet basic standards.
When you pay more, you tend to get more features - i.e. lighter, more vents, more stylish, more specialized.
I just got the new Giro Havoc a couple of months ago and I love it ! Very light and VERY well ventilated !

Yeah...sounds like alot of money but how much is your head/brain worth to you ?
I am not sure what kind of riding you do but I guess it doesn't matter.
I spent $110.00 CDN on my Giro helmet and had no problem doing so. I know that this can be alot of money but I cycle about 3-4 hours a day and I wanted something light and very well ventilated so I wouldn't be overheating. It was well worth the money but it did kind of eat up my bank account !

Hey Justen, I've got a Havoc as well. I got the Black/Silver/Yellow one.
I've also got a Bell Rhythm Pro that is my full faced helmet. Good protection, but heavy and few air vents. Although I paid around $40 USD for it on sale.
I've had a bunch of helmets, some cheap, some not so cheap. The more expensive, the more vents, the lighter they are, but all protect about the same.

I almost bought an E2, it fit great, but I liked the styling of my Exodus better. (translation: the colors matched my bike!)

I have had cheaper helmets and more expensive ones. My Giro Havoc is definetely the most expensive one I have ever had but it is also the most comfortable. I don't get hot nearly as quickly, the vents are plentiful (I think there's 27 vents in this one) and it looks good.
I got the blue, white and silver one.
With helmets, as with anything else, you get what you paid for. Cheaper helmets do protect just as well as the more expensive ones but they are usually not vented as well, the plastic usually cracks or gets easily damaged and they don't look as good. My Bell Vertigo Pro was pretty good but all the colored stuff on top started to chip and crack and the helmet looked pretty rough. It also didn't have as good a fitting system as the Giro.

Here is my favorite lid. It is a Cratoni. It is all carbon and would sell in the States for almost $500. Unfortunatly it stays on the shelf these days because I had to put it to use and now the entire shell is fractured.
But of all the helmets I have owned it is the most comfortable and lightest one.

I just can't bring myself to spend 80 bucks on a piece of cast styrofoam... You know what they say: If you've got a $10 head buy a $10 helmet.
Thanks guys for the input. Now just have to see how much $$ i got.

If I'm not mistaken, the 'they' you're quoting work at a bike shop and are trying to upsell a customer! :D
People don't seem to like hearing that a $40 piece of styrophoam from Walmart protects a person as well as their $150 piece of styrophoam from their LBS.
I understand that a more expensive helmet will give you more airflow, and I make no claims to the contrary. $110 of airflow... Maybe I should rig up some cans of compressed air on my cheapo helmet. That might even out the field a little, and I would still have saved money!
(for the record, I bought my $40 piece of styrophoam from my LBS)
I made my helmet from pieces of cardboard and styrofoam I found in a dumpster. I use duct tape to hold it on.

They are good but fit TINY. The xl is way to small for my head. Their measurements aren't right at all in what they say fits :)

If you want a nice full face for a good price, go to a MX shop. I stopped by Hap's Honda here and they were selling a sweet HJC for like $139 (I think!). Very Nice graphics and a good fit! Nice big opening for goggles and peripherial vison. Just a few vents.
