View Full Version : Ok, I requested an Upgrade...
Well I only have eight starts (one DNF, two crashes, two Top10s, one 3rd, two 1sts) but I went ahead and requested a Cat4 upgrade. Yah for me ;)
One question for all you experts... Do placings in Masters B category events (i.e. 4/5 35+) count toward Cat4 points or do I have to race in the general Cat4 field?

Congrats! Now the learning can begin :)
I believe you need to do in-category races for points -- but I'll let others correct me if I'm wrong. I managed to re-insert myself into the masters field as a 3, so I'm not familiar with upgrading at our age :)

I think that in most regions, the 5 to 4 upgrade is based on 10 mass starts in any RR, circuit or crit, no matter the catagory. I wouldn't mention your crashes and DNF's in your resume
Welcome to the 4s. :)

If your upgrade guy is anything like the one here then you will most likley get a negative but here's hoping  4/5 races still count for 4 upgrade points

Placing doesnt matter for 5 to 4 upgrade. Just starts. If you're referring to points toward 4 to 3 upgrade, generally a 4/5 35+ field would not be considered as there is an age restriction on the competition. By letter of the USCF rules, IIRC, even doing an open 30(35)+/40(45)+ doesnt count for 4 to 3 or 3 to 2 upgrades, but this is an area your upgrade coordinator has some discretionary latitude.
Yes, I meant points as a Cat4 toward a Cat3 upgrade.

crashes in the 3s are so much more fun. ;) :D
Master's class races are not open and truly categorized so all of your points towards cat 3 must be earned in your [general] elite class and categorized races. Points + minimum of 25 races with fields of at least 30 entrants + 25mi RR or 20mi Crit. Top tens and pack finishes in quality races can technically earn you an upgrade without the points, too. Good riding and good luck!!

I'm pretty sure you only have to start 10 races that meet the minimum distance/field size requirements. So crashes/dnfs count toward an upgrade.
Although I still wouldn't explicitly say that I crashed/dnfed in a particular race...

Really? So he could be a Cat 3 35+ and Cat 4 general? That doesn't make sense.
Neither does it make sense that he could only earn 35+ upgrade points by racing in the general/elite.

No, you cant be a Cat 3 35+ and a Cat 4 general. You only have 1 road race category that must be attained through qualifying races. There are no 35+ upgrade points, you're either 35 years old + or you arent.

I've posted this before, but in our region, masters races count for upgrades up to Cat 2. So racing in the 35+ or 45+ 1/2/3 as a Cat 3 you can upgrade to Cat 2.
When I upgraded from Cat 4 to Cat 3, only 3 of my points were from an elite 4 race (the one elite 4 race I did), the rest were from 30+ Cat 4 or 35+ Cat 4/5 races. When I upgraded to Cat 2, 19 of my points were from Elite 3 races and 6 were from 35+ 1/2/3 races. Elite 3 points were definitely easier to come by.
If masters points counted toward Cat 1 I'd be there by now, but my Cat 1-o-meter is only at about 50%
If Cat 4 masters could not earn upgrade points toward Cat 3, then we'd have the same sandbaggers winning the 35+ 4/5 races every week.

Just for clarity, can a 47-year-old race M35+ if M45+ is available (race with the younger riders)?
I'd assume "yes," because the ranges aren't stated, so it's just a > relationship.

I got my upgrade to 4 after only 7 mass start races. 22, 4, 6, 4, 3, 31, 1, but I won a 4/5 stage race as a 5, so that might have helped.
I got mine after 7 races as well. 1,3, dnf*, 3, 2, 3, 11*. The dnf was because one of my teammates crashed and was laying in a puddle unconscious. The 11th was because I went out hard and hurt the field then a teammate of mine went for a solo breakaway (and won).

I did not know it was possible to request a 5-4 upgrade without having done 10 mass starts. Some members are saying they upgraded with seven races etc... how is this possible? I thought the only criteria for the upgrade was doing 10 races. I currently am a 5 and my results are 3, 11, DNF (flat tire) and first. Once I have raced 7 or 8 times is it worth it asking for the upgrade? Or should I wait until I do 10 races?

It depends on your rep. In Colorado, (pre-ACA -- Beth Estes) I upgraded to Cat 4 in 6 races, with Cat 4 points, as I was finishing top 5 in every race. It then took 6 more races to get to Cat 3, and two of those were climbing races that had me off the back. I had legit points for the 4-to-3 upgrade though.

will I get more kudos if I won the cat 5 and I am a 14 yr old junior? I take it consistent top 5s get the officials attention? Maybe I need more of those...

You can honestly win a cat 5 out of luck and being in the right spot in the field sprint.
It takes knowledge and strength to consistenly get in the top 5.
