For velodrome?

I assume yes, as this is the track forum. It really depends a lot on the velodrome so I would ask there to see what they recommend.

As a rough rule of thumb, you'll probably need 80-85 gear inches (equivalent to 48x15) if you're an adult. If you're a young 'un, then definitely ask your instructor/local velodrome for advice.

Basically you need a gear that you can push comfortably at speed on the track. If its too small you can't go fast enough and will spin like mad. If its too tall, then you risk hurting yourself and not having much fine.

At the beginning of the season, its best to run a little smaller and build up both spin and strength. When you need to go bigger you'll know.

For beginner track, and with your 42 ring, start with 81" which you can get with a 14t cog. When I'm lapping at 40kph (24-25mph) I'm thinking of coming off and swapping to a bigger chainring. Between 30 - 40kph, 81" is just fine. Our rental bikes use that gear.
