Recreational & Family - child trailer advice & suggestions

I'm in search for a bike trailer to trail my 5 & 2 year olds. Can anyone suggest a brand? I saw one at Costco for $174, that operates as a trailer or stroller. Will the trailer put stress on my bike? I'm thinking about using my Trek 5000. Thank you.

I think Costco is carrying Schwinn trailers. They should be fine for tooling around town to parks and local attractions. They are fine light duty trailers.

Another option is to buy a used trailer, but at $174 for a new trailer you won't save much on typical used Burley.

Your 5 year old is likely getting toward the end their trailer days. They should be starting to ride on their own soon. You can get another 2-3 years of trailering with the 2 year old.

Your bike should have no problems pulling the trailer.

We've been very happy with the Trek GoBug. Not the cheapest, not the most expensive, but very well built. It also has lots of legroom and headroom, but a large-ish 5-year-old would be a tight fit.

You might look at a trailercycle or (expensive) tandem for the 5-year-old, and a trailer for the 2-year-old. (you can tow a trailer behind a trailercycle behind a bike, but you'll want low gears)

Towing puts a lot more stress on the engine (you!) than the bicycle itself. However, it can be fairly hard on rear wheels, so make sure your rear wheel is in good shape (high even spoke tension, hub recently serviced if needed, etc).

+1, With yard sale time here you might be able to p/u a nice Burley for cheap. Otherwise, check out Amazon.com for reviews. I recently got an Instep prowler for free from a neighbor who was moving and didn't have room to take it with.

I have a chariot, expensive (for me at least) but very versatile...jogger, carrier, stroller...

A year ago, reading reviews, I think runner's world gave the cougar very high marks, save for price. My daughter seems comfortable in it...
