C'mon, fess up! I know, if you really want to be competitive, go race. That's what they say but when I'm on a ride, I notice 95% of the riders I encounter seem to be competing. I admit it. If I see a rider ahead, I'll try to run him down. If I see somone behind me, I'll try to hold him off. Being a big boy, I'll still try to keep up with the fast climbers. I might not keep up, but I'll continue to work hard hoping that they tire and somehow, I might catch back up or maybe even pass them. I actually make a little game out of it just about everytime I ride. Some may say it's not healthy, but I think it is! Helps me push myself a bit more than I would if I were to just go out for a leisurley cruise to 7/11!:D

So c'mon admit it! Are you the rider that says,"I can't let them get away!" Or," I can can catch that guy!". Yeah, sometimes the other guy may not know you are trying to catch or compete with him, but when they do, we can tell!:p

Oh, you all know I'm a competitive b*tch. No need for me to admit it in this thread. ;) :p

If I wanted to lose I'd go race. I'll stick to chasing down beach cruisers and throwing an elbow as I pass or giving them the look after I've humiliated them.

Now why would I want to compete with someone who creates the best draft in all of SoCal? :p :D

Well, I am one the least competitive persons you will ever meet. But I force myself to be internally competitive because it is the only way I can improve. This will often manifest itself as trying to keep up with the alpha dogs on the hills (I don't do intervals, so the hills are my best opportunity for improving my strength). For me, this has 0% to do with trying to beat them, and 100% with using them to motivate my lazy ass.

Yes, but you admit it and that is the first step to being a good competitive b*tch!:D

Gina on the other hand plays Mrs. Humble. She usually just goes with my flow. But I have seen her a few times pass a couple different guys with a vengance. I point it out but she says it was me! She's still in denial.:p

Mr. Beanz:

I think this is just natural, normal human behavior. It's also the chief reason I joined a club. I noticed when I was out riding by myself that whenever I came across another cyclist or two, if they let me ride with them a little, I'd ride better and faster. It didn't take me long to realize that I'd train harder and improve faster if I had a group to ride with than if I rode by myself. So, I found me a club, paid my money, bought the jersey, and I was "in."

I still find it to be true. Whether on the road or on the track, I work harder and ride better and faster when I have other people around me. I just think it's smart to harness the psychological power of that instinct to maximize your training.

Good point! Afterall, I did start riding because a few people I knew said I was too big to ride! They motivated me!:D

I will sometimes chase down riders ahead. It's a good reference point but I'm not really trying to drop them. The reward of catching them is that I can suck their wheel for a while :D Can't say that I have ever put much effort into staying ahead of anyone.

So that's what that elbow was all about! If I remember correctly, you stuck an elbow into my ribs on the SGT 50 miler!:o

+1 Ditto. I do like to compete with men sometimes, though, as I think that's hot. You know, act like I can beat a man's butt, fail miserably while pumping his ego and then batt my eyes at him like he's a big strong man who could take me home by the hair and....other than that, I guess you could say I'm not really competitive.

Hehehehe! That's funny ME. You know, we have had a few guys get very upset cause Gina passed 'em or couldn't stay on her wheel. Even gone as far as to cuss up a storm! Gina just laughs and can't figure out why they get so upset as they should realize she's drafting me. Still entertaining though!:D

I'm not competitive in my training. When my schedule says I have to do three hours in Zone 3, I pretty much stick to it. I'm a slave to my HRM! That's one problem with multi-sport... you can't overdo it one day when you've got to plan for tonight's swim workout, tomorrow morning's run, tomorrow night's weight training, etc.
That said, I always try to hone in on a target on the bike leg of a race. I suck grapes on the swim and run, so I try to make it up on the bike. You're not allowed to draft in tri so if someone passes you, you have to drop back several bike lengths. Last fall I got into a pissing match with another cyclist and we ended up sprinting trying to gain position on each other. I blew up my legs, the guy beat me back to T2 and worst of all, I had nothing left for the rest of the race. I let my competitive steak get the better of me. That was really dumb.

They cuss! Why that's just rude. Gina is so gentle (but a force to be reckoned with on the bike). I can't imagine anyone getting their bibs all tight up in there over her passing them. Geez! Of course, I was drafting off her on Sunday before she dropped me. I had no desire to beat her, though. I just wanted to hug her. But I'm like that with most women. There are so few in this sport that I'd rather team up with them than against them. :D

Gina is a funny one! She is so sweet but strong and doesn't know it. She was worried that after the ride you might be upset thinking that she was trying to compete with you. She wasn't. She merely tries to stay on my wheel. I do a pace that pushes her without dropping her. She said she thought you were a great rider and says you're stronger cause you get out in front. She rides my wheel and feels she can't even compare to your badself!:D

Yes, well, please tell her I wasn't the least bit upset. I rarely take issue with any rider for being stronger than I am or taking the lead. I only take issue when competitiveness becomes catty or, like in the thread about the racer who wouldn't talk to Lombardi, silly and immature. There are many strong riders on here, and I love having them around (and yes, whether they are aware or not, they motivate me even if I don't do things their way or see eye to eye with them). Gina is is a very strong rider who just keeps getting stronger, and although she drafts off you, she at times pulls too. She and I were switching off and on and taking turns for awhile there. I really enjoy riding with her, Fred and look forward to the next one!:)

It's been good for her to see dedicated riders such as yourself and the others. I could get her out to ride but hardly ever enough to say, "I should get into shape". After Satuday's ride, I told her we ought to hit up some hills. She actually thought about it and said, "if I watch what I eat, I might ride better"....I'm kind of scared thinking she might drop me then I'd be the one swearing!:D

I think the competitive nature is just what's bred in all us cyclists. Any good cyclist, who says otherwise, is just lying through their teeth.

When I was riding with Team Pro Bike Arcadia, our favorite pasttime was the big sprint to the city limits sign. One time, I caught everyone sleeping, and sprinted up and was the first one crossing Arcadia. I needed some oxygen though after I did that. Didn't have a HRM, so I couldn't tell what my heartrate was.
