Foo - I'm about to trade my car for a bike...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
No, I'm not going car-free. I'm just trading one fuel-efficient vehicle for an even more efficient vehicle that I'll enjoy using even more.
This kind of started this past weekend, when I found out that I'd pretty much need to get rid of a car since we're going to be moving. I Chronicled a bit of my adventure on my blog and in the Commuting forum but I figured I'd post here to get the Foosters in the loop too.
After putting a "Trade car for a road bike" ad up on Craigslist and getting a bunch of really lame trade offers, I decided to revise my posting and ask for cash or trade. These offers were insulting... stationary exercycles, bike-shaped toys from Target (Schwinn prelude?! Come on...), old mountain bikes, etc.
Today, I started hunting around the LBS used stuff and found a Trek 1000 in my size. Not only that, it's an '06 that got sold back to the store because the buyer didn't really want a road bike. I've seen brand new bikes with test miles that have more wear than this 1000. Supposedly it's got about 50 miles on it, but I couldn't tell it's not brand new. The bike shop owner will give me the "new bike" warranty from the shop too, which includes lifetime tune-ups and free labor. Basically I only pay for parts.
When I mentioned that his asking price was about what I am going to get if my car sells, he seemed interested in initiating a trade. I'll get my car spiffed up a bit tomorrow and take it out there Thursday unless someone makes a cash offer before then (I could be about $200 ahead if I get what I'm asking for my car). Otherwise, the prospects are pretty good that I'm going to actually trade my car for a bike.
:)
By the way, I'll still have an SUV and a fuel-efficient car. I just don't need 3 motor vehicles right now, but I do need a light, fast bike for the upcoming nice-weather commuting, group rides, and the like.

Normal people don't know what a road bike is.
What you post: "Trade car for road bike"
What they read: "Free car for my old bike"

God, that gen Escort is butt ugly... I'd just sell it and get a buncha bikes from thrift stores and co. But if you don't like, or have time, to work on bikes, that trade seems a.o.k.

Hell yah they do!
My wife and I were sitting in a restaurant after just having visited the apartments that we are certain we're moving to, and I said "I will need to get rid of the Escort... I wonder if someone would trade me a good road bike for it?"
She met me with "you already have two bikes!" but after explaining what exactly I'm looking for in my next bicycle and explained how taller, skinnier wheels, a lighter frame, "curvy" handlebars and different gearing can help me, she understood.

I actually did go car-less for a couple of years. But then, when I went to visit my parents in LA, what would I do??? Rent a car. However, it was a fun experiment. Part of the reason why I did was I had an ecopass, which allowed me to go on buses, and light rail for free. I was able to go just about everywhere, taking my old beater mountain bike on lightrail. However, it did get inconvenient when it did rain. Hauling groceries and other things from other stores did become a challenge, but I managed. Eventually, my family coerced me to get a car ... so I go a Prius. Well, at least I was still true to the environmental aspects of it. :D
Prius... They're green, but financially burdensome.
It's funny, I talked to a couple of guys over morning tea about 15 minutes ago, and the one guy who drives a Prius (because it's saving him money - which it isn't) thinks I'm a dumb*** for trading my Escort for a Trek 1K.
On saving money with a Prius... You could buy a used Toyota of similar size (Echo or Yaris in place of a 1st gen Prius; Matrix or Corolla in place of a 2nd gen), or even a new Toyota, and be cash ahead over the next 100,000 miles, even if fuel jumps to $5 per gallon. Consider the price discrepancy, and then consider the real life fuel economy of the Prius. Stock for stock, you could buy a LOT of fuel with the additional cost of a hybrid.
If your goal is to get more miles out of your tank and reduce your carbon emissions while driving, a Prius will do the trick AT A FINANCIAL LOSS TO YOU.
Hopefully, you still use your bike wherever practical, if you're really into saving the environment.
I'm not really as concerned with the environment as many people here are. I'm just looking to trade a vehicle that I don't use anymore for something that I'll enjoy. All the while, I will know I'm doing "something" to help our planet, but I don't obsess over that aspect.

I have some good buffalo pelts, and some corn that I'll trade you for your sweet car.
