I've got jury duty starting soon, and I want to ride there. Anybody know where to lock a bike there?

I used to work in downtown Brooklyn on Court Street. Most days I'd ride to work and lock my bike to any of the solid structures out front.

One day I went out to lunch with one of the nurses in my office and as I was walking back to the office I pointed out my bike. We walked over to it and I noticed the cable lock on it was cut 99.9% through. (I hadn't noticed anyone f*ing with the bike but...)

Needless to say, I never did that again.

My advice would be contact one of the parking garages over there or check with the bike shop on Atlantic Ave. and Smith Street (maybe he'll let you park it there for a fee, but he doesn't open until...)

Make friends with one of the bails. Maybe there is something they can suggest. As busy as it is, that is not a neighborhood I would want to leave a nice bike locked in regularly. It is the repeat parking that is the problem.

Yeah, that's it for sure. I'd probably ride the singlespeed, but it's still kind of decent-looking. Maybe I should just ride the beater hybrid, but that's the one with the most QR pieces.

Being in construction (sort of), I have had to cut and remove cables, chains, pipes, poles, rails, posts and gratings from locations all over the city, and I came to the conclusion that I don't really trust cable locks or regular round link chain. An average Joe like me can cut through them in a second. That being said, I would still bring my bike there, and chain it in a high traffic area with a U-lock and hex/square link chain combo. Being as heavy as they are, I would keep the lock there (or near there) for the whole week.

I work in downtown brooklyn, but behind police barricades and park in a garage.

Do they have bike parking?

And my tip of the day:
on that square link chain, dip the last two or three links in liquid rubber. Your paint job will thank you!

That sounds like a great idea. I am glad I thought of it :)
