Took one of my customers out on a Tandem ride last week and On the ride we went to my LBS. He was thinking of a new bike and finished up getting a Giant FCR3. A bike to replace his aging MTB that he uses as a commuter for 3 days a week.

I phoned him this morning to find out how he felt about the tandem. Remember- Not a regular cyclist. He did a Metric century with me last year- his first big ride and he completed it with just enough energy to have a goods nights sleep when he got home. So I was just a bit apprehensive when phoning him to see how he got on on the Tandem. Only 25 miles on a saddle that was not set up for him- on a bike that only roughly fitted and his major concern- No Controll on the brakes and steering. He enjoyed it. I got his cadence up to 85- although he did not realise it- He did the ride in an average of 16mph and he got a top speed of 32mph on one of the down slopes. Admittedly it was on a flat route, and fairly quiet on traffic but he actually enjoyed it.

It got me thinking. Not so much about the Tandem but I am a solo rider. Out on the road bike and I do not ride with any one else. I go out and do my ride and keep to my Zone that I like. I pushed Tim to a level he has not gone to before. Higher cadence- Higher average speed- Higher speed on the flat- and he did not realise he was being pushed by me. I even got him to put in a lot more effort than he has done before on the Slopes. It may have been a Tandem- but if he had not worked- then we would have been a lot slower.

Now the only problem is going to see if he fancies offroad on the "T". Now if he vcan take the 35mph downhill slopes over rocks and ruts- I might have a new Tandem Co- Rider
