Hello,
my wife and I would like to try out tandeming whilst we are still in grad school (we have some free time, occasionally ;)
Nobody in Charlottesville stocks them ("We've sold three in nine years!"), and I spose I don't blame them. But that makes it difficult to either find a second hand one, or try one out.
Does anybody know of a dealer in Virginia, preferably central or western, who stocks tandems?
Failing that, has anybody shipped a tandem from Europe? There is an endless supply of lovely Dawes tandems back in England....

There is Mt Airy Bicycles in Mt. Airy, MD. It is a bit of a drive for you but they do have a good stock of tandems. They are kind of between the DC beltway and Frederick, MD. It would be about a 3 hour drive.
Second the Mt. Airy shop; Larry Black sells/rents tandems, triples, quads etc. and is extremely knowledgeable/accomodating.
I've thought about Mt Airy, but the idea of driving along the DC beltway is kind of akin to a second circle of hell for us; I'm from a small town in rural Herefordshire, and she's from a small village in rural Texas!

Unless you drive on the DC beltway during rush hour, it's actually not that bad. Early mornings on the weekend and you have most of the beltway to yourself... Besides, there are other ways to get to Mt. Airy from VA, e.g. Route 15 and then I-70 or I-81 and then I-70...
My mother does not like the beltway either and takes a 1.5 hour detour to avoid it on her drive here. You could use 81 which is a pretty nice drive as was mentioned. I agree that an early morning weekend arrival would be smooth. You could return on a different route.

Mt Airy's sibling store in College Park MD may be closer: http://tinyurl.com/2ucdp2 (doesn't avoid the beltway, tho...) -- website for both is http://www.bike123.com/ (we rented from Mt Airy but bought from College Park, just because the latter was 15 mi & the former was 28 mi for us -- lucky us!)
Has anyone tried Rockfish Gap Outfitters in Waynesboro?

I have not been to College Park in quite some time, but when I called them about a year ago they said they were not carrying tandems as the sister Mt. Airy shop had so many. Regardless, if they are driving that distance, best to call in advance and map out what bikes you want to try and where they will be.
If you happen to be up in the Philly/NJ area, you can stop by Tandems East (http://www.tandemseast.com/) in Pittsgrove, NJ. I have not visited there yet, but I believe Mel runs the business out of his house. You may need to call and make an appointment.
I think TandemGeek has a list of Tandem shops on his website. DC may not be a drive you want to do but you may find that there is a good shop near a location that you will you be travelling to in the near future.
Good Luck.
Last time I was at Rockfish Gap Outfitters (maybe 2 months ago) they didn't have anything. There is a bike store on down in Waynesboro called Cycle-Recycle that might have a couple Raliegh tandems in stock. I think I remember seeing one there a month or so ago.
