Hey, is anyone on this board planning on riding RAGBRAI this summer?

I've got a friend who's going. He's riding with the Pork Belly Ventures.

As for me, I'll just eat pie and drink beer and skip that whole Iowa thing. :D

I'm also with Pork Belly. They run a nice charter and have a bicycle powered blender that they use to mix margaritas. I haven't done the ride in four years.

Not this year. As Cub fans continue to say, "Wait 'till next year."

This will be my first RAG and I, too, will be riding with PBV. I am really looking forward to seven days on the bike in the hot, humid, midwest.

My wife and I will be riding for the entire week. That is provided we get in. Lottery results announced tomorrow. Fingers are crossed!

I did it last year and had a great time. This year I was going to do it with my wife on a tandem. That didn't work out but I am hoping to tandem it next year.

My first RAGBRAI this year. Pretty awesome. It was real tough for the first 2 days for me. But my body finally adjusted to the heat and distance and I was OK tuesday onward and really enjoying Wed - Sat rides. I'll be better prepared next year!

I don't get those who can party and drink 20 cans of beer until 2am every night and then ride the next day repeatedly however. How the hell did they do that??? I'd die.

I've ridden RAGBRAI 16 times, the first time in '82 and the last in 2002. Great event! Best week you can spend on a bicycle!

I had a great time this year. I enjoy the entire week of RAGBRAI. My wife had problems with her knees the last few days of the ride. After last year she said she didn't think she wanted to do it again. Then this year as a Valentine's Day gift, she signed us up for the lottery and she did it with me agian this year. After suffering through the last few days this year she has said she's done with it. So if I do it again, I'll be doing it solo.

Quickbeam - tell your wife to volunteer and be a support person for your team or the event. I had a great time doing that the 2nd day I was there not riding because I was dead from the day before. She could ride with you every other day or something.

I put up some of our pics at flickr.com/podcycler

I have a week to spend with my 16 year old daughter, and we're considering either: a) RAGBRAI or b) our own do-it-yourself week long bike tour (probably in the South or East). I'm hoping to experience some father-daughter time, but she'll want to hang with some kids some of the time. I'd enjoy 70 miles a day into the middle of nowhere on our own, I like solitude -- she'd be bored. We'd probably plan a trip so we could "see" something, ie. C&O, Washington, Annapolis, Del/Mar/Va, or perhaps Blue Ridge Parkway, Asheville, Gatlinburg, something like this.

What are the advantages of taking my daughter to RAGBRAI?

What are the advantages of taking my daughter to RAGBRAI?

I rode it for the first time last summer with some girlfriends. Is she a reasonably responsible 16 year old? I would have had a really good time as a 16 year old. If I had done .000001 percent of what I did last summer my parents would have grounded me until I left for college. There are a lot her age riding. Lots of every age. It was interesting seeing Iowa on a bike and I may do it again. If you start out really early in the morning you miss a lot of the drinking and craziness but what fun is that :)
I think everyone knows about the end of July heat in the midwest but what surprised me were the hills in Iowa. The last day last summer was a hard hilly ride after 6 days of hills. It was still fun.

You and your daughter will become much better friends and she may actually listen to your advise in the next few years of her adolescent life after your bonding experience.

I rode it last year and had a blast. I'm planning on a little longer ride this year (3 weeks), so I'll be skipping it this year. But I will be back the following year.
