General Cycling Discussion - The Grave

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

(Thanks to RonH and his, "Lunch in the car" thread.)

They lure you with promises of freedom, speed, prestige.
Over time, you begin to notice some changes. You start thinking, "Jenny Craig" or "Weight Watchers."
One day, you pull up to the drive-through even though the wait inside is clearly shorter. "I just don't want to go in right now," you say to yourself. You're becoming trapped by your "heavy" lifestyle.
At the supermarket, your excuse for parking as close as possible to the entrance is more practical now. You are sincerely concerned about what the walk might do to your fragile, overweight frame.
Climbing the stairs are against doctor's orders.
Today, you feel good about yourself because you walked to the refrigerator without assistance...
Put a stop to this nonsense, immediately.

Speaking of such things, I noticed something tonight at Wally-World again. Have you ever noticed the overweight people that ride the electric carts? No physical handicap, (except self-inflicted), but they ride instead of walk. To me these are the people that should be walking.

We should never have been allowed to circumvent that 'survival of the fittest' rule.
The only prejudice I have is against fat people. Fat people can't work hard, and people who work hard can't be fat.

I never could see a reason to park a car right next to a store, I always park in the back row. Where there is no time lost, for looking for a closer one. The kids always whine about having to walk, just to get to the door. But I think its better for them to walk a little ways.

Try saying this to a Sumo wrestler. :) Sumo wrestlers have a lot of strength and muscle underneath the fat. Babe Ruth carried a good share of body fat on him but worked hard. A lot of the classical boxers and wrestlers had their share of body fat.
I'm neither thin nor fat, but I'd rather have a reserve of body fat than be too thin. I get annoyed at the really skinny people who hardly eat and then they get out of breath just walking around the block. They obsess over the fact that a piece of food has *gasp* calories in it and overlook the fact that calories = fuel.

Good point.
It's not your thinness (some people would snap like a stick), but your overall fitness that counts. In fact, it's your overall happiness that counts more. Not how you fit some idea of "ideal."

Can't work hard? What a load of crap. Hard workers can't be fat? Get your head out of your butt.
How many of you know fat people that want to be fat? How many people do you know that wanted to get fat in the first place?
Just who are we to judge?
No, I'm not fat, I'm just a guy - probably just as judgemental as the rest of you, but (as it happens) not against other peoples size, colour or religious beliefs.

This is so sad that I can't even think of a response. How dare you to presume to know their circumstance. Why is it still ok to persecute overweight people when so blatant a remark about any other group of people would bring down the PC police? When will we learn that people are just who they are? Do you really think they like being that way? No, I'm not overweight but I do have compassion for people and try to be constructive not destructive.

Look, I don't have a prejudice against fat people, but, being a thin person, I get sick of them calling me "lucky" or whatever. Granted, I do have some favourable genes, but maybe they wouldn't be in their position if they didn't spend 5 hours a day in front of the television, or eat McDonalds three meals a day or whatever. For Gawd's sake, JUST GET OVER IT!!!

If we have to talk about fat people, I liked better the thread "Why do American have such big old butts".

"Do Americans have bug old butts"?...As he cranes his neck for a look in the mirror.
The next time you are at Wal-Mart just take a look at the people, that's all, just look at them.
OK some people have a hormone imbalance.I worked with a guy who was huge.He hurt his back and had to have surgery. Before they would operate on him he had to lose 100lbs.His Dr. had some tests run on him and come to find out he had a hormone imbalance. After he stated taking hormones the weight melted off of him,no excersize or dieting. Some people are an endomorph body type.Endomorph body types put weight on easily and have a lot of trouble getting it off.
OK, so when you are at Wal-Mart checking people out ask yourself, are all of these fat people I see suffering from hormone imbalances or are they endomorphs?I think the answer will be no.

Sad but true. Good point, well said. See, we can be kind and still get the point across.
You know, I used to weigh 265 lbs, back when I drove a truck for a living. It must've been all thos "chicken fried steak with gravy" specials at the truck stop diners! :D
Now, 10 years later, I'm 175 lbs. I never thought that I was 90 lbs overweight! I no longer bend axles, either!

The only thing better than a "chicken fried steak with gravy" special at the truck stop diner is two of 'em. Used to do a little regional driving in Southwest Va. and have had a few of these my self. One of the greatest casualties of the 'fast food' revolution was the lil' ol' Grand Ma, making 'home cooked' goodies at the diner.
Ack!.....now I'm embarrassed!Either I need to learn how to spell on the fly OR proofread my posts......excersize indeed!
