I'm almost done with my Bottecchia Giro d'Italia. Down now to the last little details. Since I bought it my best guess has been that it's a 1972 since that was stamped on the hub lockrings. I need to find out what kind of decals to put on the Fiamme red label tubular rims. They seem to come in knight, flying horse, rectangular with block letters, and rectangular with tilted bock letters and I have no idea which would be appropriate for 1972. I'm guessing flying horse or block letter but I really don't know. Anybody out there remember or care to take an educated guess? Thanks.

An auction by Hilary Stone http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=003&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=130099343407&rd=1&rd=1 has some oval labels dated 60s/70s so something from 1972 could have the oval labels. It is a good question tough, when did Fiamme switch from the oval to rectangle labels (and when did they switch from the football to oval labels)?

I'd go with the red knights heads if tubular, they were certainly still in use in the 70s. The flying horses were clincher rims, red or yellow. Get them here, nice work, honest seller:

I've got some yellow label tubular Fiamme rims rims from 1972, the decals on my rims look identical to these: http://cgi.ebay.com/Fiamme-vintage-rim-decals_W0QQitemZ300033815934QQihZ020QQcategoryZ56197QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

Hope that helps-

Yeap. AS I recall, the yellow were lighter than the red. The yellow horses are unferrelled clinchers.

Okay yellow were definitely lighter than red. The consensus seems to be:
Flying horses for clinchers
oval knight helmet for tubulars?
I guess I'll be ordering some red knight head versions for my restoration.

OK, this is interesting - I got my repro 'knight's head' decals in the mail last night. They look great. I set them next to the rims to see how they look and...they are too big! By a lot. I haven't put a micrometer on the rims yet but by eyeball I would say around 18-19mm width. Just wide enough for the skinny, rectangular, red 'FIAMME' decals on them now. The oval decals are around 5-6mm too wide. I find that odd. These rims fit 23mm tires perfectly but maybe there were wider rims.
