has anybody done this? I've been trying all day, and I got the stem off, but I can't freaking get the bolt under that off. I went at it with a wrench until I stripped it to the point that I started getting scared.

please help

Assuming this is threadless, what bolt are you talking about?

have you ever disassembled a headset before? if the answer is no, make sure you're going about it the right way. check sheldon brown's website for more information. if it's too confusing, or you think you might've stripped a thread or a bolt beyond what you can take care of, take it to a shop. there's nothing wrong with asking for help and supporting a local business.

with some more information, though, i wouldn't be surprised if people here can help you out. what bolt are you talking about?

it the off chance this is one inch threads, the two bolts are tightened into each other and can be tricky, but not hard.

If its threadless, once you take the stem off, the fork should be able to come right out, but don't do that unless you know what rings from the headset go where.

i hope you meant the nut. because the only bolt above the fork is the one that secures the quill stem.

in anycase, just turn the darn nut the correct way (to the left!!) and you'll be dandy. use a correct size wrench for it...none a vice or adjustable wrench. or you'll risk stripping that sh*t

by to the left, he means counter clockwise.
Bring it to the shop and ask if you can watch them do it if they are not busy.

I don't mean to be a dick, but your terminology is pretty confusing. I assume you're talking about the locknut? A threaded headset has, from bottom to top, a screw on race and a locknut.

If you're stripping it, then your wrench is the wrong size. They make special headset wrenches for this very purpose. Also, if you're using channel locks, stop! Or anything with teeth for that matter. Also, it should not be hard to get this locknut off... time to hit up the LBS.
