View Full Version : new bike shorts

I just picked up a new pair of Zoic bike shorts. They look like mountain bike shorts on the outside but have an inner liner with a chamois. They are VERY comfortable - I hate the spandex look. Not cool at all.

Anyway, I was just wondering what is the best way to take care of the chamois to make it last long.

I am going to want to wash these shorts after each ride as I know you don't wear underwear with chamois's but will machine washing it each time wear it down ?

Has anybody heard of the zoic shorts.
I like the fit..they are MTB shorts but cut for women so they fit me really well and don't look overly baggy.

Justen (female) - I put this because people still think I am a guy from my name - I'm not !!

there should be a tag for washing instructions inside like any other clothing generally has. If you cant find one and your concerned with damaging the shorts, buy some woolite and wash them by hand. Better off safe then sorry. Especially for what a pair of shorts runs these days.

Um Justen, well a chick in spandex is better n a guy, you have to admit. ;)

I also do the woolite thing most of the time, make sure you do a 2nd rinse, esp if you wash them by hand. Woolite is gentle, but um it still can irratate your more sensitive bits.

Ive got a pair of Zoic shorts, very well made. they should last you a good while.

Hey Scoob,

Well, from a female point of view, I don't like seeing guys in spandex. It's just not a good look.

Thanks for the woolite idea, although I did throw them in the washing machine and they seem fine. I paid $115.00 for these shorts but they look cool and are really comfortable. They seem really durable too. I have tried other shorts with chamois but this is the best fit so far. I don't feel like I am wearing a diaper!!

I wear my spandex with pride.

Here is my washing system....

1.) Reset the wash load to "small".
2.) Set temperature to "warm / cold".
3.) Set cycle to "delicates".
4.) Turn machine on.
5.) Open lid and sprinkle in some soap, maybe 1/3 cup.
6.) Let the water fill up to let the soap dissolve before putting in the clothes.
7.) Place all my cycling wear into the washing machine, jersey, undershirt, spandex shorts, socks, etc.
8.) Close the lid.
9.) When washing is finished (45 minutes), take out clothes and hang up to dry.
10.) My jerseys and shorts are ready to wear the next day.

Ta Da. :D

I must disagree.
Last Sunday I was riding behind a young lady who was wearing spandex shorts and I didn't have any trouble getting up the hills. :D

I wash all my cycling clothes with regular detergent and the washer set to the cold water cycle.

Spandex is Ok on both men and women, however
Speedo Bathing suits should not be worn by 98% of
the male population (myself included!).

I machine wash, delicate cycle, add shorts etc. to machine
after it fills unless instructions specifically state hand
wash.

I meant that I don't like seeing guys in spandex. I am female and I don't find looking at guys in spandex is a big turn on as it obviously is for guys (as you mention above).

There are many guys who should not wear spandex - especially old men and guys with

Justen,

However foolish I may look in spandex
its not a fashion statement.
I still haven't found Baggy Mountain bike Bibs :D
for me its a matter of function.

but yeah, it ain't pretty.

hi,
1)you'll get used to it, especially if you start racking up miles
2) just throw 'em in the washer. Could be they last longer if you baby them, but
I never have

I guess I would fit in that category. But I do wear 'spandex' anyhow: function before form. The fashion police is welcome to catch and book me.

So no apologies from my ugly self, Justen. But what's that about "the guys with..."?

BTW 'Spandex', are those the tight, padded 'bibshorts' worn by pro and serious roadies?

Contrary to what you might think, not all guys are out to impress women 100% of the time.

I look like HELL is spandex, but it is a neccessity for me on long rides, and I am happily married, so avert your gaze :)

I'm with RollingGeek! I wear spandex to ride faster than the guy next to me wearing the parachute! It never ceases to amaze me what people wear during time trials or triathlons and then wonder why they can't get any faster. Skin tight is sleek and fast... that's all there is too it! (and my wife thinks I look stunning - at least that's what she tells me - and it's all I need to hear!)

I didn't say they were....and we aren't out to impress men all the time either.

As for averting my gaze -I'll try :-)

I did not say any of you guys are ugly wearing spandex. I agree with the whole comfort factor too. I just see some guys in spandex who don't wear it well.

I don't even like it on me and I am pretty young (well - very early 20's) and in good physical shape. Comfort is definetely important but women look at guys just as guys look at women. Why is it wrong for me to express my thoughts on seeing males in spandex ?

Okay...spandex on guys in races is a whole different thing. I am talking about the average Joe who is cycling around in the park in spandex.

And I am sure your wife does think you're stunning. Thus far, the rest of us have no evidence to the contrary either :-)

I didn't say they didn't. I was just stating that I don't like spandex and on SOME people, it's not a good look. Does that mean that everybody acround the world should stop wearing spandex just because Justen says it's not a good look ? Of course not. I just stated my views about what I thought about men in spandex.
I know everybody here has thoughts or opinions about all kinds of clothing on all kinds of different people and body types.

If we didn't have different opinions, it would be a pretty boring world !

All right, boyfriends, you all need to give poor Justen a break! While I think ALL you handsome studs look GREAT in spandex (although nekkid is better, I always say), she is entitled to her opinion! So you guys leave the poor girl alone!

Justen:

Let's be perfectly clear about this. No one cares how you look in your lycra shorts. Cycling shorts are not about looks. Only cyclists think they look good in them anyway. Everyone else knows that bike shorts look geeky.

Cycling shorts are about function. They are padded for comfort and to prevent saddle sores. They fit tight for aerodynamics and so that they don't ride up, chafe and get bunchy. They are meant for comfort and efficiency while riding. That is all. And they are never to be worn with underwear.

Got it?

Yo Zack,

It's kind of a long story... but the short end of it (get it?!:D ) is that I am the web site developer for http://www.geocities.com/decyclesindiana and I am also a cyclist. They went on a bike tour last year and the theme was Peace in the USA... and they got a great deal on some clothing - which included the shorts that I wore in this particular time trial

Justen, all is in good fun..never fear. I don't think the forum member you quoted was "defending" anyone, since it is obvious to all that the Underwear Nazi's posts are all made in jest.

At least no one has sent you to http://www.humorless.com/ yet.

I personally hate the spandex look on myself, so I rarely wear spandex. Are the Zoic bike shorts just for women, or are they made for big guys, too? Is there a website about them?

Thank you,

Hi Dan,

I feel bad about how I reacted now.
It's been a very stressful week for me. One of my friends has Leukemia and is not doing well. I am just so stressed out.

Anyway, as for the Zoic shorts..I got them at Mountain Equipment Co-op in Vancouver. They were pricey but really fit great. They have an outer short and an inner liner with a chamois. Very breathable and what's really cool is the short fabric looks like MTB bike material but actually flexes as you cycle...not sure how to explain it.

But yes, they have these shorts for guys too. You can get them by mail order.

I think they have a website...maybe do a google on zoic shorts ?

Thanks for your reply and setting me straight :-)

I just throw it all in the wash. I've got shorts and stuff thats lasted me for years and still going strong. A good trick is to throw a cup vinegar in with your stuff. Helps get rid of that lingering funk.

Don't feel too bad. I doubt that you hurt the Underwear Nazi's feelings. I doubt that the Underwear Nazi has feelings.

Twenty years ago, when I was in grad school, I lost a roommate and friend to leukemia. He was a good guy, gentle and scary smart. His death was a tragedy. I cherish my memories of him. It is because of him that I am on the national bone marrow donor registry.

Treatment has improved in the last 20 years. I hope that medical science can help your friend. I will send up prayers.
