View Full Version : I want to build my own rear tandem wheel.....
Hi folks,
I have used Sheldon Brown's website to build a rear wheel for my touring bike. 'twas a success, I used 36 hole XT hub, DT Swiss double butted spokes, and a Mavic rim. I need a new rear wheel for my tandem because the current one doesn't have quick release, and I need QR in order to use my BOB Yak.
So, I don't seem to be able to find hubs with 46 spoke holes, so should I make another wheel like the one I did for my touring bike? With 36 holes?
Thanks for any feedback.

You should be able to change the axle to a hollow one of the correct length and buy a skew and your set. I did this with my old wheels both front and rear.

Wow, the man knows his bike parts.
It seems there are 4 sizes of BOB Nutz
3/8 x 24 BN9600
10 x 1 metric BN9610
3/8 x 26 BN9620
I.G.H. BN9700
How do I measure which ones I need? I have professional calipers. Which measurements do I have to take?

The first number is the diameter, you can measure that with one of your calipers.
The second number is the thread pitch, commonly measured with a thread pitch gauge.
Shimano rear hubs are 10 x 1, as are most modern rear derailer type hubs.
All the best,
Sheldon
