Northern California - Where and how are you riding this weekend?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Racing? Riding around the Sutter Buttes? Meeting up for the local hammerfest? Brevetting? Birdwatching? Or just pulling the kids in the trailer?

How are you going to be enjoying our Northern California this weekend?

I'll go first: Icebreaker Triathlon at Granite Bay. (14 mile bike leg.) The first tri of the season and a chance to see if the wetsuit still fits!

Since I don't have a lot of time (and pending weather) I'll probably ride to Skyline Dr. from my house in Daly City and head to that resevoir(?) where Skyline meets 280 and back home.

I was invited to ride with the Los Gatos Bike Racers Club on their leisure Sunday ride but I can't this weekend. Hopefully soon though! I think next week I'll be riding up in San Rafael with my cousin.

Sunday: Start in Folsom, climb Salmon Falls, Prospector, to Georgetown, down to the confluence, climb Old Forrest Hill road, head into Auburn and then back to Folsom. Should be about 80-90 miles and 6k-7k feet of climbing.

This is our last big ride before the Chico Wildflower next weekend (which will be my first century).

Friday I raced Sea Otter (don't ask... :( ). Today I will haul my sunburned, hungover, dehydrated, lame-excuse-for-a-cyclist butt out for some kind of "recovery" ride. Sunday I don't know yet, may go to watch some of the Santa Cruz crit.

Since it's funky out today, I'll run some errands, do a little work around the house finish our taxes :p and just get caught up with life.

Tomorrow I plan to do my East Bay loop (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/East-Bay-loop)from my home in UC up Palomares, Redwood & Pinehurst, up to Lafayette and Walnut Creek, back down to Sunol, over Calaveras & back home. I figured out a way to bypass the higher-traffic areas of downtown Lafayette and WC so I'd like to try that out.

Hey Dave, maybe I'll see you out there? I think my ride covers a lot of the Primavera route, and I start out from my home and head along most of the Alameda Creek Trail out to Niles.

I'll be riding a dusty rose/mauve colored Rivendell road bike, with a small black canvas roll bag in the back, and I'll probably be wearing a red Amici Veloci vest with an offcenter green chainring logo.

I was going to do a ride in Marin, but on my way over there, it really poured! Windshield wipers at max ... I figured if it's raining this hard near Burlingame, it can't be better up in Marin. So u-turn back home.

Think I'll try to get in on the Sea Otter century tomorrow.

Now that's just crazy. A friend of mine in LA is preparing for the PBP Brevet this year too. Whenever I call her, I say "crazy woman".

Oh well ... I guess it gives me an opportunity to wash my cycling laundry.

I'm hoping to do a full brevet series someday. I'm not up to it this year, tho. But maybe I'll see you on a double century later this year. :)

I think I saw you on a thread for Wildflower. Maybe I'll see you there before the double. I do plan to do Davis and Grand Tour ... however, a lot depends on if the gang convinces me to do Eastern Sierra ... ugh

So, did you ride? ;)

Princess that I am, I opted for the cycling class...hubby got up in time to join me. Just didn't feel like getting wet & having to clean the bike.

Hope the BATB folks have better weather!

Of course I rode, Weather is just a minor problem, I bike-commute! It was pouring. No one showed up for the group ride...It's only rain. I did an out and back to Putah Creek from Vacaville, and went up Mix canyon on the way back. At mile marker 2.7 up Mix Canyon the water was sheeting down the road, and my kids don't need both parents in the hospital, so I turned back. I'll try again soon. Burned off some built up stress. I hope the BATB, stays reasonably dry too.

I wish. My wife and I got there a little late (around 8:30). Didn't see any BF people, they probably started right on time. Got on the road about 10 minutes later. Our bodies stayed dry due to the plastic rain jacket I bought the night before but our heads got soaked. I forgot to buy helmet covers. We were doing OK until our toes got soaked too. I forgot to buy shoe covers. Turned back a half-an-hour later, dried off in the car and headed to IHOP for breakfast.

Nice route though, nice t-shirt too. I hope the others stayed drier. I guess we are fair-weather cyclists after all :o

I'm not sure if shoe covers would even help if the rain was as bad as it was in the Peninsula. Sometimes, you just have to admit that it's wet, and you're gonna be wet.

I should've worn my MTB shoes instead. These old PI road shoes have a lot of mesh.

I've never done it, but seen some other people carry shopping bags in their jersey. Stuffing them in your shoes seem to keep you a little dryer.

I was wearing shoe covers, they got wet through in 24 miles. Somtimes it rains so hard you are just going to get wet regardless.

Planned to ride on Saturday but when we looked at the Doppler radar, opted for the trainer and the gym. On Sunday, rode the tandem 42 miles from Canada and 92 to Peet’s in Los Altos Hills. Great ride but a little windy on the way back but no big deal.

I did a ride out to Big Basin via Redwood Gulch, and returned via Bear Creek Road. Here are the stats:

Length: 82.17 miles
Altitude Gain: 7914 feet
Ride Time: 6:50:27
Average Speed: 11.9 mph

As long as we weren't doing sustained climbing, I was okay, but climbing Redwood Gulch, hwy 236, and Bear Creek just demoralized me. But I rode with a bunch of cool folks ... they made sure I was okay, and would backtrack, just to make sure I wasn't too lonely on my climbs. It was a gorgeous day ... blue skies, but it was a bit cold when going through shaded woods, as you would expect.

I was actually going to do the Sea Otter Classic century, but there was no same day registration. This meant I would have to drive to Monterey on Saturday, find a motel, then stay overnight to do the ride ... no. It would have been ideal if I could wake up early, drive to Monterey, register, then do the ride. But that was not an option. I'm glad I didn't do it, because if you think about it, parking is in a dirt area, and after having it rain the whole day before, it would have been ugly to park your car there.

I did the Pine Flat Challenge today. Not a race they say but the first 4 speed freaks to the top were racing each other. The 3,100 foot climb is over a 11.2 mile distance. I wanted to see them finish so I started at 10:30 AM and noodled my way up in my 22/34 low. Took just over 2 hours and 3 quarts of water. The first finisher took 51 minites and 53 seconds. On the descent I caught up with a truck pulling a horse trailer. The driver pulled over and let me by.

Ah. I was there for the Elite 4s and the beginning of the 3s race but had to head home partway through. I think your race started after the 3s or even later.

Anyway, what did you think of the course?

re: Hamilton, yeah, I don't blame you. A buddy of mine did the Elite 4s last year and it was pretty tough. We're doing the Masters 35+ 4s together this year, along with a bunch of other teammates, so hopefully we'll make a go of it.

Saturday rained about an inch up here. All day soaking rain with wind. Sunday by 9 it was 17 mph in Vacaville and by noon it was up to 29. Red Rider was in the City taking a Spin Recert class and I wimped out. I got in over 100 miles during the week so I guess it is not to bad. I will have to get a couple of easy rides and we have the Wildflower this weekend.

The race started at 11:10. The course was interesting... There were some half hearted attacks, but no one really had enough gas to make a dissent gap on the hill, and keep it on the descent. After the Ronde Circuit and people doing everything but turning on one of the corners there, I was really worried about that U turn. It turned out not too bad. Except at about 7 laps to go, some guy got stuck between the lines. So the brain surgeon started to elbow me from my line, while whining that I somehow was doing something wrong. Meanwhile I am just following the guy in front of me, who is following the guy in front of him, etc. Placed in to 20, which is kind of sucks.
