I just bid on and acquired two lemonds on ebay, a 1999 55 cm Tourmalet and a 1999 57 cm Buenos Aires. I will see if either of them fit me- I am 6'2", 32" inseam, and have had recommendations from 55-58 cms from various bike shops. The lemond has a longer than average top tube (higher too, in relationship to the top of the seat post, from my observations, so I should find some room to fit in there. In the meantime I bought two new bikes for my son and daughter, both size large compact frames, one a mongoose pro morzine and the other a schwinn super sport 2001. We all have close to the same inseam- my daughter's is a half inch to inch longer, my son about a half inch shorter, and my son is growing, so there should be a use for each bike. The idea is to take advantage of the bike paths around here, assuming it stops raining, and build up to a metric century first, and a mile century later. My son is 12 and very overweight, so the project should do all of us some real good. This brings the total number of bikes in the house to 16, if I count correctly. Some are sizes the two older children have ougrown, but the youngest hasn't. Others are old or, worse yet, mountain bikes. We'll have to see how it all pans out.
In the meantime,I no longer am exploring how to acquire road bikes with triples, as all but one road bike in my house has a triple. Maybe next year after the good weather goes away and we face another spring (I still prefer skiing to bicycling) I will be in the market for one of those bikes made from overrefined aerosapce byproducts. In the meantime, I guess I have to stop writing and make those little pedals go in nice fast circles.
Anyone who rides in the Annapolis area and knows of real C category rides let me know- I don't want rides where the advertised pace is 15 mph and the slowest rider is doing 20. I want to reinforce my kids' interest in this sport, not get them dropped by a bunch of hotshots.
