Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Wet v.s. Dry Lube for Chain. Opinions

i use this stuff and i see so much of a diff in the amount of grime my chain collects compared to wet lubes. I don't hear that grinding action as much either. It seems it could lengthen chain life, but now too sure about that. What's your preference?

Wax is a mess to use--- finish line makes a much better dry lube that is truly a dry lube. You will have the cleanest drivetrain ever, but will need to relube after every rain... in fact, if you commute or park your bike outside, you probably will want a wet lube. I use dry for my road bike-- my fair weather bike, and wet for everything else.

wet lubes attrach dirt dust and grim
dry lubes don't that is why they are called dry lubes
I wouldn't recommend using a wet lube on a chain for the fact that the grit dirt and grim are what wear out drive trains

Use wet lubes when it's precipitating, and dry lube the rest of the time.

I like dry lube. You have to reapply fairly often, but that's way easier than cleaning and relubing disgusting greasy chains all the time.

I use white lightning. I tried pedro's ice wax, but it is pretty gunky. White lightning actually does shed like it says on the bottle. It kind of flakes off, which is why it doesn't last very long, but stays clean.

The Teflon Finish Line gear gets my thumbs up. Great stuff.

I use cyclon ATB dry lube (http://www.cyclon.nl/index_cyclon.html, sorry dutch, english is under construction). Which is more thick than the normal dry lube, I do like it a lot because it "feels" you do not have to relube your chain as often than with the normal dry lube. It is thicker but not so thick it feels like candal wax, more like oil.

Going against the general trend in this thread, I was using White Lightning for awhile and recently got turned on to Phil Tenacious Oil. It lasts waaaaaaaay longer---over a week vs. like two or three days if it doesn't rain.

Wot, you lot are a total bunch of lube fiends, I'm doing well if I remember to splodge some grease on more than three times a year (I ride 25 miles a day, 5 days a week). I replace my chain approx once every milennium

white lightning on the fixie every week. I have to carry my bike a lot, so keeping chainring marks off my clothes is nice. It's not the best, but it's the cleanest.

Teflon dry is still dry, but still quite dirty.

stuff i've tried:
krytech - didn't really lube very well, gums up
phil - smells BAD, gets really dirty
pedros dry - unremarkable
pedros ice wax - gums up
white lightning - gums up, hard to get off
rock & roll - dries out quick
boeshield t9 - cakes up
triflow - easily the dirtiest

flavorite at the moment: prolink
I'm now steering clear of all the wax lubes. they just get dry between lubes and the chain runs loud. I figure if it runs loud, it isn't lubed very well. most of them are a bittch to get off as well. i prefer things that dissolve when I want them to.

prolink application: my routine is to lube every bushing one at a time, run the cranks a few revolutions to get it on all the drivetrain teeth, and then wipe off the excess on the outer plates and drips on the chainwheel/ cog.
in between lubes are a wipedown with a rag, followed by 2-3 reapplications of fresh lube until the crunchies are gone.
they say that prolink is about the same as homebrew btw.

Finish Line Wet XC - lasts about as long as Phil's, but without attracting sand, hair, bugs, glass and small animals. Works very well in salt/slush.

Wet lubes are for lawn mowers and motorcycles.

been using prolink exclusively for a while now. i should get around to buying one of those gallon bottles of it.

performance wise I think prolink is the best. I use it on all my geared bikes and the drivetrains are smooooooth. Commuter fixie needs to be clean though, so WL with all it's shortcomings fits the bill.
