I want to get back into bike riding to help me get back into shape.
Im not wanting to spend the $$ on the high end bike but with a budget up to about $300.
Ive been looking at some of the Schwinn's at the local merchadise store that go for around $200. 700c models, I understand these are a China made bike and not as good as the US made one's but whats the opinion of these for what im looking to do?
Or can you recomend any others that I can pick up localy for around the same price?
Thanks

I think you might like shopping at LBS to see used bikes or low end models with no gears or 7 gears that run $200-300. Depends on how fast & far you want to ride. Cruisers & comfort bikes can be found in that price range. Just because a bike is made in China doesn't mean it's cheap. Depends on parts used and assembly. My LBS has Giant Simple cruiser for $230, no gears, lots of fitness potential. You could ask about last year's models for discount?

You should be able to get a good Hybrid or Comfort bike for that price. Look at the Trek 7000 series, the Giant Cypress and the Trek Navigator. All good bikes. Good luck finding a bike not made in China

And was woundering if the China made bikes from Schwinn or other manufactors are decent enough bike for what I want it for and not end up as a pile of junk.

Do yourself a favor and buy at a Bike Shop, they will stand behind the product and are there for any problems you might have. You CAN get a bike in that price range at a BIKE SHOP too. This is in your best interest. Nothing wrong with Schwinn, just buy it at a bike shop.

Good luck T

The bike shop will do tune-ups that the department store will not do. A lot of the bike shops will do these tune-ups for free. My LBS will even true the wheels from normal riding on the rough roads around here.

Chinese frames run the gamut from high-zoot racing machines to boat anchors. The key point, which I'll reemphasize, is to buy at your LBS not X-Mart. It's the difference between having your bike assembled by a bike mechanic or a stockboy.

Yeah made in China and Taiwan is not the kiss of death. Every bike you look at will be made overseas. YOu have to get into high end bikes before you find anything made here. Personally I can see no problems with these bikes manufactured overseas.

A brand new Trek 7000 hybrid is under $300. It's got an adjustable stem, steel fork, 700c wheels, triple crank, and a wide, comfortable saddle. Bike shops will do a much better job of assembling the bike and making sure it fits you. Many will provide free tuneups for a year or at least the initial one will be free.

Giant makes the Cypress ST, a steel frame hybrid, for $240 and the Cypress for $300. I don't recommend low-end hybrids with suspension forks as the suspension is not very helpful and just adds weight and takes away power.

Either of these bikes will be fine for riding around town, on the bike paths, out in the country, even dirt roads. When you get back in shape and want to start doing long group rides, you can get the road bike and keep the hybrid as your beater bike; put racks and fenders on it.

21 Speed Motobecane 300HT for Only $269.95 Free Shipping!

It has some nice components on it for the price and the new for 08 frame has a Lifetime warranty. It’s worth a look. I order a bike from bikesdirect.com after xmas and got a Fantom elite… Awesome bike! The bike showed up in excellent condition and took about 15 min from start to finish.
