Hello again, fellow bicycle tourerers!

I am three weeks away from starting my TransAmerica tour (E->W) and I'm still trying to figure out how best to accomplish a "slight" detour from the main route. I'm flying out to Newport News (thanks for the plane ticket advice jamawani :) with a good friend of mine on May 4th. We are planning on picking up a third man at Valparaiso, Indiana..he's a student there..Thusly, I'm trying to figure out what the optimal path would be to get up there..

It seems like heading north at an angle about halfway through Kentucky would make sense, as we would still be advancing west while approaching Valparaiso, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not. The guy that I'll be riding with to get there thinks that we should just take a bus, but come on..this is a freaking bike tour.

Anyway. If the approaching Valparaiso at an angle idea holds water, would it work to return to the route in a similar fashion, except cutting through Illinois instead of Kentucky? ...Forming a delightful bicycle-touring detour triangle?

Any advice would be muchly appreciated.

Thanks!

If Mohammed won't go to the mountain, bring the mountain to Mohammed.
Why can't your friend in Valpo meet you somewhere rather than you detouring all the way to northern Indiana? Aren't you planning on taking the TransAm? Why not have him meet you in Bardstown, Kentucky. He could take Greyhound down to Elizabethtown and ride the few miles to Bardstown. Then the three of you could commence from there.

If staying on the TransAm isn't part of your plan - then - sure, you could cut up to Valpo - then head due west across Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska. Not sure what you have in mind.

Thank you both for the valuable suggestions.

We were hoping to mostly stick to the TransAm..so such a large deviation isn't really all that great. The main reason for going all the way up there was to take a few days off and just hang out. The guy at Valpo rents/shares a pretty big house and there would be plenty of room for us. I'll have to discuss it further with my companions and see what they really want to do (I don't care; just want to get started on my vacation :) ).

Thanks again for the advice.
