Several members of the National Federation for the Blind have organized a west-to-east tandem tour of the Katy Trail. There will be 7 blind riders serving as "stokers" on the tandems, and 7 sighted "captains" in the forward position of the tandems.

They are planning to cover the trail in five or six days, between June 16-23. They are still looking for one more sighted rider to serve as a captain of one of the tandems - is anyone out there interested? You would need to pay for the food, lodging, and support, but the tandem is provided. If you're interested in this opportunity, which sounds like a lot of fun and even a life-changing experience, you can contact James Grass at 209-296-8096 or jrg@waterfallsusa.com

My wife and I are doing the Missouri DNR Katy Trail ride in June on our tandem. I did the ride last year and met a gentleman on a tandem with a blind stroker. What an adsolutely wonderful program!!

Bless you and your organization!

I wish I could, I have captained for a group of visually handicapped youth here in Kansas City and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately I will be on a tour of Ohio that same week. For any who might be considering it, please go for it. From what I've heard, the Katy Trail is a very nice ride and both you and your blind stoker would get so much out of it.

One side note: If you do not get any affirmative responses, you might try the touring forum. I wonder if most tandem teams could not leave their teammate for a week. On the other hand, perhaps some solo tourers could captain a tandem for a change.
