Thought I would start a new Thread.....!
First my stats:
Total time 10 hours
Ride time 9 hours 7 min
Ave speed 12 mph
108.16 miles
12, 240 ft of climbing (per my Garmin 305)
OMG! This ride was tough! Started out @ 6:30 am
Saw Lee, John and some of their Santa Clarita friends, Brandy, and Caligurl @ the start.
It was COLD to start, my fingers were numb....I was miserable for the first 1/2 hour maybe.
Not bad.
Saw lots of people...Frank, Ian, SirLance..Also my friend Laura, Vertical Bob, Steve, Cathy, didn't see BigJohn, Saw Deb and heard Orrie yell my name, Saw my friend David Lee from SVFBC.
Met Thompson @ the end.
Bill was working one of the rest stops, it was VERY nice to see a familiar, friendly face.
Adam passed by in his car...I was thinking he should have been handing us water as he drove by!
I had done alot of the ride a few weeks ago with Vertical Bob's group so I knew what to expect.
I do want to say I descending everything in my DROPS! I had JUST put on new bars, as my hands couldn't reach the brake levers on the regular bars in the drops, I had to get some women specific bars made for smaller hands which are GREAT!
Yerba Buena was soo rough, it sucked.
Going down Deer Creek was not so bad this time, as I knew exactly want to expect.
Tony rode with me to make sure I finished, and I did not have any problems @ all.
I made every sticker stop with an hour or more to spare before the cut off time.
At the stop on decker, the sticker guy was like "you guys have such a good pace, you won't have any problems!" that made me happy.
Bill was @ the 4th sticker stop, he was surprised we were there so quick. I felt Great then.
Stunt at mile 90 was slow going but I made it finally to the top which is where I first saw V. Bob and company.
The remainder of the ride was cake, because I knew we almost done!
As we pulled up to the finish line, Caligurl, Sirlance, Lee and John were all clapping. That put a big smile on my face!
all in all a GREAT ride and a GREAT day!!!
Breathless Agony HERE I COME!!!!

Total time 9:38
left @ 6:52 and got in @ 4:30.
that ride was a killer, way tougher than BA...
there is no way i'm ever doing that again with a standard crank and 12-25... I was out of my saddle almost the whole time on the climbs.
btw, i think i saw caligurl, if in fact she looks like her avatar. Red hair and pig tails?
I was following one guy who was a really sketchy cornerer and he ran off the road and piled it into the embankment, he was ok though. Another guy i rode with for awhile pulled a sketchy pass on someone and ended up with a couple of slices down to the bone on his forearm/elbow, skin missing on hip, thumb, legs... it looked like it hurt but he finished the ride.
decker was horrible, stunt was a ***** and then that nasty short grade at the end killed me.
EDIT: ride time 8:18
avg. speed 13.2
oh and i forgot to put my flat kit on my bike, when i realized it at mile 15, i was puckered up till 50 when i begged a tube off of sag. :( woops.

I had a 12-29 w/ my standard crank, and there is no way I could have finished with anything less. By the time I got to Stunt, I was standing up in my 29 for stretches.

7:50 ride time
8:18 (I think) total - really need to work on downhill skills and wtf was up with deer creek eh?
Decker was advertised as having 20+ grades but my comp says around 17%.
Overall not so much faster this year vs. last year but mentally felt a tadd easier.
Breathless next :)

i can imagine it would be rough w/ a 29 too.
I rode with another guy for awhile that had a 34-34... he just zipped right up the hills. He was like mid 40's and it was embarassing. He was really hurting for awhile, but i gave some good encouragement and he pulled it out and beat me to the finish :(

Here’s my ride report:
Started off around 7:15. A couple of buddies went off at the 6:30, as they planned to be on the road a little longer. The first 30 minutes were pretty brutal on the fingers, but still glad I didn’t bring the long fingered gloves, as things warmed up once we started riding in the sun.
I went out pretty hard and the climbs up Old Topenga was at a good clip. I latched onto a strong rider and we took turns pulling each other up the long climb.. My legs felt pretty good and had a pretty good pace on the climbs in and around Mulholland Hwy, Little Sycamore, and Cotharin. Cotharin was a little steeper than expected and I had to stand most of the beginning to keep the bike moving.
The descent down Deer creek was not as bad as described and quite pretty with the views of the Ocean. After the descent, I got tucked in a nice pace line along the PCH which was nice as the head-winds were pretty tough.
Decker! Mother – that was a tough climb. The first two miles were indescribably hard. I don’t care what kind of gearing you were running – you are going to wish you had another gear to drop down into on this climb. I really suffered here and was regretting going out a little too hard. Also, my gut was feeling a little rough. Note to self at this point, I have got to look into some liquid nutrition options. The bars and gels do not work as well on these type of climbing events. I just spun in my lowest gear and tried to recover and worked hard to fend of the bonk that I felt was coming.
Unfortunately, I flatted just after the final sticker stop, which ate into my time a little bit. I set of goal of breaking 8 hours, so I had to hammer over the last climbs of Piuma and Cold Canyon.
I worked had the last few miles and came in under 8. Total ride/saddle time of 7:21 and total time of 7:50.
Here is my MotionBased activity:
http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/2473656
Overall a good, but very hard day in the saddle. I still cannot imagine having to add 90 miles to this ride to make it a double. Nuts!
I didn’t see any BF riders on the road, but I was hammering most of the day. I saw Brandy, Extort ,GrumpyPig and met SVCRoadie at the finish.
Photos (http://s88.photobucket.com/albums/k183/__Extort/Mulholland/)
7:36 ride time, but I only did the 100 mile ride because I just was not ready for that double, and as George put it, it is the short list for a reason. I just finished two weeks of television vegetation with minimal bike riding, but still had the entire KOM to think of...
Started at 7:30AM, finished at 5:13
I did stop to help three different people with mechanical issues including David, who was a a teammate of mine last year for the MS150. Another guy only showed up to the event with short stem tubes for his Zipp303 equipped bike, ran out of CO2, and didn't have a pump... all at the bottom of Cotharin Road...
I saw so many people that I know it was scary, but I did not see Ronjon, :( I watched Sir LanceImNot blazing down Mulholland just after he exited from Cold Canyon, Scootcore was tons of fun at his rest stop (Thanks for the sticker!) and I lingered there too long.... I also got to complete the event with Grumpy, Hocus, and Ian! You guys all ROCK!
Here is a link to the pictures I took: http://flickr.com/photos/grumpypig
I started at 6:30 with IanInSD and hocuz. I decided to bring my camera instead of a vest - didn't want to carry both. It was pretty uncomfortable for the first 1/2 hour.
I'm not sure what the street names were and I didn't look at my routeslip too much so I'm not able to name all of the climbs. I did hear a volunteer telling someone that he was going to hate Decker. Sure enough, Decker was 3 miles away.
Started cramping at about 50 miles so I figured the last 60 were going to be tough. My quads and hamstrings finally just froze up about 100 yards after the start of Decker. I rested a few minutes and got another 100 yards before they locked up again. This time I waited about 10 minutes and just went up in survival (<5mph) mode.
Stunt Rd. was longer than I thought. I had browsed over Chuck Bramwell's climbing analysis email Friday night and was expecting Stunt to be 1.7 miles with 18% grades. So it was longer than I expected but not as steep.
After Stunt the other climbs were tough but I didn't care because I just wanted to get back.
Saw a bunch of BF people and rode with a few of them. Tried to take pictures of everybody but I only could take pictures when i was stopped.
I owe thanks to Ian and Hocuz for riding with me and waiting for me at the rest stops. They could have shaved a bunch of time off if they wouldn't have done that.
Hi All,
Just got back from a nice, flat recovery ride. :)
Did the challenge using the caligurl / Sir-Lance / Vireo approach of minimal time at rest stops. Started at 7:40a and rode the first 70-or-so miles fairly fast (7 hour ride time pace?). Basically ran out of gas after the rest stop on Decker. My legs were empty and I couldn't get a sustained heart rate over 140 BPM after that stop. Was riding with my racing buddy who is in much better shape than me to the Decker stop (about 4:45 ride time). The 40 miles after Decker took me about 3:15.
Per my Garmin:
Ride time: 8:02
Total time: approx. 8:50
Distance: 109.94 miles
Avg speed: 13.7 mph
Max speed: 42.2 mph (on Mulholland on the way out)
Total ascent: 12,456 ft
Total calories: 7,488 cal (5,191 cal per Sporttracks -- for caligurl :) )
Caught up with a few of my club members at the Deer Creek stop, saw them again at Decker (where they dropped me) and caught up with them again at the Mulholland stop. Rode with them from there to the finish. Met Grumpy Pig on Decker and saw caligurl, Sir-Lance, and scvroadie at the finish (sorry I couldn't stay and chat more but my buddy was anxious to leave).
As some of you know I've been doing this cycling / racing thing for more than 30 years and this ride is now in the top 5 of the most difficult things that I've done on my bike. Stunt was physically and psychologically one of the hardest things I've ever done. I ended up cramping twice and had thoughts of turning around and going back to the start. Also that climb had a couple of spots that looked like the top but weren't and I kept thinking when does this f****** climb end? The two climbs on Piuma sucked too but I had regained some composure by then.
In retrospect, if I hadn't started so fast I may have done better overall (slow and steady) but at the same time I was using this as race training and every time I reach my limits on a bike I learn something about myself.
Sorry that I didn't see more of you. BTW, when I got to the Mulholland stop there were two young ladies waving people into the park saying sticker stop. However, I wasn't going to ride past the stop anyway. :o
Hello all. I don't post all that often but felt compelled after such a tough ride. All I can say is, wow! This was the toughest ride I have done so far. Well, makes sense since this was my second century I've done so far. Like everyone said, the first 45 minutes were freezing. I had no feeling in my fingers. It started to warm up as we got to PCH and it felt like perfect weather for the rest of the day. I recognized Caligirl and was riding with her a bit. I still don't understand how she thinks the Decker climb isn't that bad. The whole time up, I was thinking to myself, "what is she talking about???"
Made it up to Stunt and the only thought on my mind was that its almost over. I really didn't expect the climbs after Stunt though.
All in all, glad I did it and finished.
Thanks to Ian and Frank for letting me hang out with them. See you all again at Breathless Agony!!!

I don't have the energy for a Brodsky or M.E. style ride report :) , but here are my bullet points:
I left with 2 SFVBC'ers (Mario and bill) at 6:40. Earlier than we were "supposed" to, but Mario had to go to work later that afternoon (!). This made the first hour ridiculously cold. My fingers hadn't felt that frigid since descending Mt Wilson on a damp wintery day. This freaked me out, because the pain in my fingers did not seem to coincide with what actual temperature was. Any theories?
I only had 2 strategies prior to the ride. Strategy #1: pace myself early. Utter failure. Similar to Cleave, I latched onto a fast group early on and got suckered into hanging with them (one guy was from La Grange, name might have been Adam?). Everything felt good until I started to run out of gas at the Deer Creek check point. I felt like I was crashing hard on PCH, but rallied for Decker. Then about halfway up Decker it became very apparent that the second half was going to be much different than the first half. A lot of granny gear action from there on out.
Strategy #2: force myself to eat constantly. Utter failure. I was always too out of breath while climbing, and too focused on staying upright during the descents. I need to force myself to eat next time, even if it means stopping! I also forgot my gel flask, which certainly didn't help... but it made me try a couple different energy bars, which were surprisingly good. Of course, cardboard covered with sand would have tasted good at that point.
Stunt was probably the most miserable point for me. Cold Canyon at the end was almost as bad, but at least you can smell the finish line by then. As mentioned by others, I think, Decker wasn't quite as bad... probably because we all expected it to be so horrible. Oh, and I totally forgot about Yerba Buena, so you can imagine my devastation, since I was mentally prepared to descend to PCH at that point.
Lastly, I will mention again that I was pleasantly surprised by the organization and support. The quality and quantity of food at the stops (and finish) exceeded my expectations by a fair margin. Only the sticker stop #4 issue keeps them from a perfect score. Scootcore, unforunately, did not come through with that EPO at the first rest stop.
So my lesson learned: follow your pre-ride strategy. We'll see just how thick I can be at BA.
What kind of gearing was everyone running ? I am seeing more and more triples these days when I hit the Santa Monicas. Old guys on triples seem to fly past me on my double :(

Well, Vance, I liked your bulleted, succinct report. Like I said earlier, one hell of a ride you guys did. I would not have finished (or at least not before sundown). It always interests me what other riders experience on challenges like these. Live and learn and ride again, right? :D Great job!

Well, I'll never fly past anyone on my triple, but that's less to do with the gearing than the rider. :p But I've seen more and more triples these days - and not just the old guys! It's a longevity thing for me (I've had knee issues and wish to preserve them), but for some riders, it's their magic bullet when climbing. I'm sure some may scoff at that, but they might be surprised.

Hey all!
I just got back into town...the kids and I spent the day SAGging the Mulholland Challenge route for George (vireo) who did the Mulholland Double yesterday. I can't tell you how amazed I am and how proud I was to see him ride and finish today. He was hurting last night when he came in from the double and after a later than expected start this morning (I honestly wasn't sure that he'd be up for riding the MC route today) he rolled out. The kids and I got ready, ate breakfast and checked out of the hotel, then set off to find him, which we did on Mulholland. I wasn't sure how to handle him at first today...he's normally a solo rider who self supports and doesn't need much along the way, but he made it clear that my generously spaced leapfrogging needed to be more closely spaced...he was hurting and needed the motivation of seeing us up ahead. Oh...and we followed him down the descents...there were SO MANY cars and motorcycles speeding up there today, I feel like we lucked out with what seemed like minimal traffic on the event yesterday. When we got to Decker he was really struggling and said that he would have DNF'ed the ride without the support, but after a quick bite to eat, he was climbing again and went on to finish the ride! Did I mention how proud I am of him??? :D
Here are the motionbased stats from my Garmin...
Total Time (h:m:s) 9:04:41 4:55 pace
Moving Time (h:m:s) 8:32:52 4:38 pace
Distance (mi ) 110.51

Hi Brandy
Weren't you saying yesterday that you felt you could out-ride him but always back off so not to bruise that male ego we all have??
btw, congrats to Vireo for the 2+1 weekend. That is some serious climbing.
As far as traffic, it seems as though Sundays are a lot worse than Saturdays. I now try and avoid samo on Sundays.

Hi,
Rode a double with a 39 X 25 because that's all I've got and I didn't want to buy a new freewheel specifically for a ride (vs. race ;) ). Was doing pretty well with it until Decker where I was sort of holding my own on the bottom until I cramped. A lower gear would have felt better on Stunt but I would have been going even slower (given the opportunity). Anyway, the old-school traditionalist in me won't allow me to put a triple on my bike. Maybe when I hit 70.

Traffic...yes, it was bad. I was worried for him on Decker. He had indicated that he needed solid food so I went up ahead to a turnout to wait for him. As I was mixing bottles and getting ready for him a car club came flying by and these guys were taking the corners SO FAR over the line...it was insane.

I have a compact crank with a 12-27. There were several points that I looked longingly at the triples that some of the other riders had. :(
Hey Brandy, that was me that yelled "Go Brandy" out of the car window on Saturday when you were climbing Stunt.
George should be proud of you. When you got to the top of Stunt you got your sticker and you were off without stopping at the SAG spot !

I knew it was you and I'm sorry that I didn't stop to say "hi". Thanks for the shout out, by the way...it's always nice to have a cheerleader and I had a couple yesterday (if anyone knows the girl with the red hair that worked the Peter Strauss rest stop...tell her I said THANK YOU!!!!) and it was so motivating!! :) I got to the top of Stunt...said "STICKER ME BOBBI!!" and was off. I was fine on fluids, was feeling "the stupids" coming on and just wanted to be done. I was really trying to stick with stopping only when necessary and I figured that with the immediate descent, I'd get my recovery there. :)

Hey vertical bob,
Forgot to mention that I saw you on at the Stunt stop. Guess that I was still focusing on my inner turmoil at that point. I swear that I had half a mind to go back down Stunt instead of going to Piuma. :o
I wasn't thrilled with the traffic yesterday but I know that Sundays can be very bad on Mulholland from my motorcycling days.
i cant remember her name....her husband was on the ride. her and her family were very nice!
I met her husband! We were somewhere after Piuma and I was feeling feisty as he passed me on the left, so I said "HEY...you're not supposed to pass girls...gimme a break, I've been getting dropped by boys all day long!" Right then she pulled along side and made a comment about him needing to pick it up before I dropped him (or something like that) and he told me that it was his wife. I let him know that she had cheered me on all day! Oh...and she saved my Assos too with that packing tape! Damn saddlebag!

My attempt at following George down Deer Creek today...
Great vid. The overall descent on Deer Creek isn't so bad... but those 2 u-turns (the left with the great view, then the wicked downhill right) are insane. I got a kick out of all the grooves from the motorcycle pegs on the latter. :)
He outran you! You should've made him climb it and do it again :p
He told me to try to stay on him, but there was no way that I could. I did a better job on Schueren and Piuma, videos to come. It was a good preview to what we need to do as crew on RAAM. We're required to keep the riders in our lights at night and he's going to be a b*tch to try to navigate descents with!

Good point, eesh! Perhaps you should get a Porsche as the trail vehicle.

Congratulations George... what can I say, you are a fabulous rider! Great job!
