Commuting - Passing on the right?

So I would like to start a thread on passing on the right as in bike passing a bike.

What are your experinces commuting with cyclists passing you on the right?
I don't have alot of commuters to deal with, Maybe 7 a week in 150 miles. I pass on the left always and tell the person and slow down to make sure they know. Note anyone taking the lane is faster than me.

Is this a Group ride thing to pass a cyclist on the right, that gets translated over to commuting?
Not very commuter friendly since I could be weaving for some reason, I always weave to the right to avoid hazzards if I can.

My mirror so far has not seen any riders passing on the right.

Do they give you an audio signal when a cyclist passes you? I don't get a left or a right audio signal.


I am having some serious issues while taking the lane. I don't care if they pass on the right. However they don't even let me know with an audio signal. Today I almost ran into two cyclists because I was at a stop light and was weaving back and forth to stay up right. They didn't even say anything as I swung back around to avoid them as they ran the red light. Another time a guy passes me on the right and almost falls down due to the rough pavement.

I think it would just be better to say passing on the left, I will move over it is not a race. Or at least I could tell them rough pavement or something like that. After all if you are faster then pass me on the left like normal traffic.

You mean a bike passing a BIKE on the right? I think you should state that clearly, because every "passing on the right" thread I've seen here is talking about passing a line of cars on the right, but it doesn't sound like that's what you're talking about.

1) the "weaving around" needs to stop. If you can't ride in a straight line it's always going to be your fault.

2) It seems that you're in the center of the lane since you mentioned "taking the lane". In that case, yes, I would pass you on the right as if you were a slow car.

Again, if you can't ride a straight line you should just ride up to the light and stop.

When I pass a weaving biker, I pass on the side they weave away from. I definitely call out as best I can, but my attention is most focused on trying to figure if they're suddenly going to weave back again (plus weavers tend to jerk toward the direction they hear you announce anyway)

Yeah, if someone is weaving, if I'm going to pass them, I do it at least an entire lane away from them.

If you're weaving around, people are going to pass you wherever it feels SAFEST. Note I didn't say "safe" - there is no "safe" around a weaving cyclist.

If you're at a stoplight, and you can't hold a line or trackstand properly (I can't), then unclip.

If you are out in the lane... I'd pass you on the right.
reason 1... I don't wanna go way around you and closer to the left lane.
reason 2... I don't wanna inconvenience you by making you move. I feel slower should keep right. If you are on in the lane, but where the right tire of a car is... I'd probably go to your left.

I don't make people move out of my way in a car either. If they wanna go slow in the fast/left lane... I pass 'em on the right.... it's easier for me to assume they won't move, quicker for me than waiting for them to move, and I don't inconvenience them with having to move. I take much of this to biking.... except I yell on your left to give them a chance to move. If you don't move, I'll say "nevermind", or "OoooooKKKKK", and go right and give 'em a weird look for not paying attention or not knowing right from left.

Maybe I was missleading, I don't weave down the road, I avoid road hazzards and then stay in a line.

Second how can you pass a cyclist at a red light? Unless you attempt to break the law by going through a red light.
Third if you talk to me I have no problems riding in a straight line moving over etc. Yell at me works the best.

So I don't buy race up to the red light unclip, and wait.

Shouldn't never pass on the right!! Unless unusual circumstances and with every effort to communicate the passing. Shouldn't never run a stoplight and pass on the right!!

Yeah, it's illegal in most US states for any vehicle to pass any other vehicle on the right, and for good reason. Common sense, though, means I still might do it to a bike to be polite and not make them take the gutter, but I'll make sure to yell out "passing on your right!" instead of just dinging my bell. If someone passes you without any warning, that's just dumb.

The only time I get passed on the right by another cyclist is when I am waiting in line with other traffic and a cyclist uses the space available to right of line to travel foward. Then I pass them as I am sucked forward by the line of cars moving on green.
