Mountain Biking - Moustache bar options for mountain bikes?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

First, I apologize if this topic has been covered thoroughly. I tried the search function and got "There seems to have been a problem with the Bike Forums database."

I want moustache bars for a Bridgestone RB-T that has been set up with mountain bike thumbies and mountain bike brake levers (Deore LX and that era Shimano). I'd like to keep all those, so I've been looking for moustache bars with the proper sizing for mountain bike compenents (22.2 mm clamp diameter for shifters and brakes). My stem is a 25.4, so that's mountainish too.

Also, I want to be able to access the brakes in the bends, which is a factor because even with a 22.2 mm diameter, it's possible that I couldn't get my brakes and shifters around the bend to mount in this position.

So far, here's what I've found:

- Apparently at some time in the past moustache bars were made for Bridgestone by Hsing Lung in these specs (22.2 outside diameter) but aren't any more. I can't find any old ones to buy.
That's according to this page: http://www.stanford.edu/~dru/moustache.html

- Van Dessel makes some totally flat-looking moustache bars: http://www.vandesselsports.com/accessories.php

Reasonably priced and looks exactly like what I need -- except -- I called them up and the guy I talked to was very skeptical about being able to coax the brake and shifters around the bends to where I want them, which is accessible from the bends.

- There are a few options from Nitto that are mountain-sized and have some degree of moustache-like bend, the most promising of which looks to be the albatross:

The first picture on the page shows the positioning I'd like for levers and shifters. I would mount them flipped for some drop. My concern with these is they don't have quite as much bend as I want.

Anyway, I'd love to hear from anyone who has an opinion. Thanks!

I'd point you towards an Albatross

That's exactly what I just bought and put on. It's actually a Northroad 54cm, but basically the same thing, just steel instead of cromo I think.

They work pretty well. I was able to gently persaude the brake levers past the bends, so they are accessible while riding in the bends. I have them flipped and will probably cut them down eventually, but they make a pretty decent moustachy bar, just a little less pronounced of a forward bend, which is OK in this case.

Be sure to hit the inside of the bar with some J.P.Weigle Framesaver or Boeshield to cut down the rust issue

Hadn't thought of that but there was a little bit of rust in there already, believe it or not, new from the store. Just a tiny bit though.

That's typical with steel items, especially on the raw interiors. It's nothing to worry about with something of this quality. Do treat the inside with one of the items suggested to prevent any degradation
