Southern California - 4/21 Ride Option, Latigo & Encinal

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Doesn't appear to be any major rides this weekend. I'm riding with a friend of mine (she's not on the forum) this Saturday, thought I'd throw it out for anyone interested.
Here's the route:
Meet at Malibu Bluffs Park (across from Pepperdine on PCH) between 8 & 8:30, roll @8:45.
Route
- Head down PCH to Latigo Canyon.
- Climb Latigo to Kanan Dume.
- Kanan Dume back to PCH
- Meander down PCH to Encinal Canyon
- Climb Encinal to Mulholland (You can take Decker if you want a harder climb, they both meet at Mulholland)
- Descend Mulholland to PCH
- PCH back to Malibu Bluffs.
53 Miles, 5500 ft of climbing (So if you want a century, you're free to do it twice :p )
Bikely link:

I don't think this section of PCH is too bad except sometimes the short bit through Zuma, and most of PCH will be going south, which is even better.
This will be a casual paced ride with multiple regroups. I'm no King of the Mountain and my friend is getting back into shape for Triathlons, so she's not used to these long climbs. Speaking of the climbs, they're long, but not terribly steep. (both avg 5-6%). There are multiple places to stop on PCH for refueling, restroom stops etc.
If you want to join for any/all of this, let me know.

Ron, I may join. I've got a climbing ride lined up for Sunday, though, so I may have to do a lighter load on Saturday. But that sounds like a great ride! And I'd be happy with the 53 miles! ;)

You could cut Encinal and go up to Mulholland on PCH. That would take off quite a bit of elevation (and heck I may need to take that option anyway :o )

I already told Cali I can't do JT, George. :( I'm going broke with Hemet/Solvang/Butterfield, etc. this year. I can't afford another road trip this month and I had to choose. I chose Hemet to knock out TC. This coming weekend, I have to stick close to home (and eat Beany-weenies as I'm now on a budget!). :o

You're making it more and more attractive...;) By the way, I LOVE Latigo. It's a favorite of mine. It wouldn't hurt to get my butt back up it. But really, Ron, these days I'm barely inching up hills! Pathetic, I know, but the truth. :o

I forgot about JT. I never saw that it got past the "Any Interest" thread. I couldn't make it anyway as I can't afford to kill the whole weekend.
We can wave to each other across the canyons...

I think the problem has been the heavy ride season. Too many rides, too many trips! :o

Oh Bummer!!
This sounds like a GREAT ride, I would totally join, but I am already doing the Conquer the Canyons
Charity ride.
It is a short ride (25 miles) but the good thing is 100% of the proceeds goes to supporting autism!

No worries, this ride (and similar ones) will be repeated this summer since it gets too hot for me to play in the valley. Have fun on your ride, great cause!

I'm now not going to be able to make this. I'm going shopping, getting my nails done, getting a facial, cleaning my place and going out for dinner that day. Yup. I'M NOT CYCLING! :D (well, okay, maybe a few miles but close to home and just for a workout, but no all day thingy...:o ) You guys have fun and be safe out there!

No problem at all, I think you've earned a day off! I tell you, the week off my bike sucked, but I feel so much stronger because of it. Rest is a good thing!

I got back a bit ago, great ride! 53 miles and just over 5000 feet of climbing. Finished strong and was ready to do more (good thing, cause I will be next week)
I'll be doing this route again in the future for sure.
Great to meet you scvroadie, hope to ride with you again soon!

What is this Crystal Lake ride you speak of? :)It goes up hwy 39 San Gabriel Cyn. past the east fork and ends at Angeles Crest Hwy. Usually starts at Encanto Park in Duarte. Its a 30 mile climb to A.C. or 25 to Crystal Lake. Best climb in So Cal and thats sayin something. ME and I are meeting at Encanto tomorrow at 8:45 ish and heading up there somewhere. Most likely GMR but Crystal Lake is a possibility. Join us.

It was great riding with you and Kelly, we all were close in our abilities. We will definetly have to ride together again. Keep climbing all the routes out your backdoor in the Santa Monica mountains and you are going to turn into an awesome climber. You will have no problem next year in on the Mulholland challenge.
The tri-tip sandwich at Trancas market was incredible, then rode on to the big Rock at Pt Mugu and back to Malibu. Total mileage ended up being 81 miles with 6025 ft of climbing.

That bbq smelled out of this world! I almost drove up to get one when I got back to my car. Congrats on your extra mileage and thanks for the kind word. We'll definitely be out there again.
