Classic & Vintage - Peugeot PX 10

Startling ad in local paper today: Vintage Peugeot PX 10, new tires, all original derailleurs, Simplex! (quelle horror!) etc. Sounds like an original. '73 model, for $425. Did describe the
original Peugeot paint job: white with black checkerboard.
Brings back memories, this was my first good bike in '70. Unfortunately I stripped and repainted it, and converted it to 8spd STI with clinchers before bequeathing to an unappreciative brother.

Nice machine. I commuted on one today, in fact, and often tour on an old white PX-10. What a beautiful feel.

Had a gorgeous PX-10 ... until it got stolen :-(

I had one too, until I stupidly sold it in 1984. It fit perfectly considering how little I knew at the time.

What model Brooks does it have? Mine had the stock staddle and I thought it very comfortable, surprisingly so, though I rarely rode over one hour at a time.

I have a new Brooks B17 now that I can't get myself to put on a bike. It doesn't look the same to me.

I think the PX-10 had a Brooks Pro on it.

Personally I think a B17 (or any unsprung Brooks) saddle
looks great, especially on a vintage ride.
then again, given the comfort, who cares how it looks?

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I seen a Vintage Peugeot in good condition at a moving sale for $25.00 Canadian. I wanted to buy it, although it was one size to big and I am not familiar with Peugeot. Not sure on the model, but it had a lugged frame with the head tube lug in a geometric or stepped pattern maybe the best way to describe it as shadowbox design. It had simplex/Sugino/ Mafac components not sure on the rim size or make. This is the second Peugeot I have seen for this price in the last month, are they worth anything?

$25 Canadian is a good buy for any of the older Peugeots and would be fabulous for a PX10. Peugeot used their checkerboard decals on several models and as a result alot more bikes look like PX10s than are. With that Sugino crank I doubt the one you saw is a PX10. Should be a Stronglight, I'm pretty sure. Look for a Reynolds tubing decal with the 531 running diagonal. That's the real deal. The other models will ride fine but won't get any collector attention.

When it comes to French passions I have to admit I've always preferred the embrace of a Motobecane. Much higher quality paint and detailing.

Btw and to answer your quetion more directly a early 1960s PX10 with some rare Stronglight and Simplex holds the "unofficial" eBay vintage bike record. It pulled in something like $7200US a couple of years ago.

Oh I think they're the best-looking saddle there is! It just doesn't look the same as the one on my old Peugeot, because it is NOT the same I guess. I'm afraid it won't fit as good, and won't take off either of the saddles I have now to give it a chance. (Might interfere with a ride!) I thought the old Brooks Pro looked great, especially after some of the black wore off. Of course that whole bike was lovely to look at.

Ride a '73 PX10E converted to a fixie, and love it. The stepped pattern on the lugging is indicative of a UO-8, however (Gordon P's post). Earlier PX10s had a more ornate, swirly lug pattern. I've also got a PKN10, a PFN10, and a UO10; they all ride great. An old UO8 would make a good around town beater bike, though I'd make sure the rims are alloy and not steel first... steel rims are not noted for their braking ability. In fact, they're not noted for braking at all.

My bad, I misunderstood what you meant in original post.
I thought you meant the brooks looked funny, not
looked different (?).

From what I've seen the PX10 used a Brooks Professional
as standard issue. These were the older, small rivet models.
On rare occaisions they were fitted with an Ideale saddle
(strange that this was rare since Ideale is french company).
You can still find older Brooks Professionals (NOS). First
place I'd look is Wallingford Bikes.
