Bicycle Mechanics - Tuffy testimony

Just wanted to say that Mr. Tuffy saved my ride yesterday. After I rode home from work, I inspected my tires as I usually try to do after a ride. The front tire had a chunk o' glass sticking out squarely across the middle of the tread. It must have been a half-inch wide. When I pulled it out, there was a gaping hole left behind. I pulled the tire off and declared it dead. The glass had gone all the way through the casing, which is no mean feat on a Continental Sport 1000 (lots of tread). The Mr. Tuffy strip underneath was also gashed, but only about halfway through. Without it, I would have had at least a flat and possibly a blowout. This was a close call that could have ruined my perfect record of not flatting a tire with a Mr. Tuffy strip installed. Did I mention that I hate flats?:)

Six months ago, I put on Slime tire liners. I assume they're similar to Tuffys. Since then, I haven't had one flat. I am a believer in liners.

As a commuter riding 22 miles RT each day on trashy urban streets I can attest to the effectiveness of Mr. Tuffy liners. I used to get flats about once a week. Now they are rare. I also use Performance thorn-resistant road tubes.

I will attest to the same experience of Rainman. I used to flat often. Now, with Mr. Tuffy, I flat rarely. Alas, this morning they succumed to a large staple. They aren't bullet proof, but when I inspected my kevlar belted tire, I found it riddled with glass bits, and lacking the usual sidewall damage. So the combo has been working well.

I had conti ultra 2000s (700x25).

After two flats on the front tire within 30 miles I installed mr tuffy liners.

No more flats.

But I still dig out good-sized slivers of glass.

My next bike will have thick-treaded 700x35 tires (Bontrager Select - maybe Kevlar, too) and I'll use some old Slime liners. I've found that Kevlar-belted tires get punctures just outside the edge of the belt.
