Hi, I'm looking for a tandem bike to share with my girl friend. Mostly interested in something vintage, rideable condition that we can fix up with new seats and chain, and can maybe eventually get repainted. Saw some on eBay, but am just looking around some more before I decide what I want to do. Looking to spend less than $500. I'm in Boston, but would pay for shipping or could pick it up if it's in the state. Anyone got anything?
Thanks in advance!
KELLY

Not for $500. Good luck in your search!
There's an old shwinn at my local bike shop..27" wheels..girl frame..needs alot of work..I'll check the price tomorrow if I get a chance...oh, and a 20" wheel one too..very funny looking
The bike shop wants $200 for the Schwinn tandem 27", but the 20" is not for sale..The shop is in Greensboro NC...Higgins is the name

In addition to Ebay, Craigslist.org is also a good place to look for vintage Schwinn, Columbus, Huffy, and other brands of one-speed to 10 speed tandems. I believe Boston may rate its own sub-list in this regard. You might also check with Sheldon Brown / Harris Cyclery as they may have some local leads.
FWIW: Shipping on the vintage tandems, other than Greyhound, can be fairly expensive given not only the oversized nature of the package but moreso because of their weight... which is usually twice that of even the heaviest modern tandems.

That would most likely be a Schwinn Town & Country which, in 50's and early 60's had a rear step-through (mixte) frame and was later offered as a step-through mixte model for both the front & rear riders about the same time as the performance oriented "lightweight" Paramount tandems came back on the market as production models.
Somewhere in the archives you'll find a few of my previous posts that describe the geneology of the Schwinn tandems... well, that is if the forums database / search engine ever recover.
The 20" wheeled tandem is most likely a Green Gear / Bike Friday model, e.g., Family Tandem, Tandem Tuesday, etc...
I have a Tandem I'll sell. Its a few years old, but in like new condition. Its a fun bike. Made by Univega. It has 26" wheels 8 sp triple. I'd let it go for $550. I'm in Rochester NY.
