I normally post in the road racing forum but thought my question might be more appropriate here.
I'm getting into running now and would like to find a watch with a pace function, preferably via GPS.
I've seen some of the garmin units and they look huge!! Are there any that wouldn't look silly on
a small person (I'm a woman, 5'3").

I already have gizmos for my bikes, so I don't need anything beyond running functions. A plus would be something with HRM functions and ability to download to a computer.

The Garmin is packed with features, has everything you listed and is not as big as it seems. Pretty light. I love mine and think you would too!

I have the Forerunner 301, and although it's much bigger than a standard wristwatch, it's really not that big. Plus it has an HRM and you can download data to your computer.

are you talking about the 201 and 301?

Polar 625(I think) has the footpod with pace.

I have the Forerunner 305 (and previously used the 201). It seems big at first but it's not that bad.

I've got a Garmin Edge 305. They really aren;t as big as they seem in pictures. The Forerunner is more meant for multisport, but I got the Edge as a gift and it has been great. I just have a small I-pod case that it fits nicely into and clips to my shorts, don;t even notice it.

That's a great idea. I got the Edge and resigned myself to the fact that I wouldn't be able to use it for off-bike stuff, but the case with clip should work great for running/hiking. Do you get good satellite reception even though it's not 'face up'?

For the record, I tried running with my Edge in the pocket of a fuel belt, and it tracked my whole run just as accurately as it would mounted on the bars of my bike. Loving this toy even more now.

To the OP, if you want something you can refer to with a glance, you'll probably be happier with the Forerunner, but the Edge works great for me as I'm primarily a cyclist, and only occasionally check to make sure the Edge is still operating while it's tucked in a pocket.
