Northeast - Commuting from Westchester to Midtown Manhattan?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Thinking about moving to Pelham, Dobbs Fairy, some kind of Westchestery place where Brooklyn people go when they want backyards and not terrifying middle schools.
The commute looks to be about 20 miles, which is more than double what I do now, but not impossible. I only worry that there is no safe way there.
Anybody do this route?

Honestly, Broadway is just fine until south of Van Cortland Park, and then it is miserable but there really is no alternative. After the B'way bridge I recommend taking right on W218th, left on Seaman, after Dyckman swing right on Riverside and cross the exit to the Henry Hudson, walk up the stairs, and enjoy the West Side Greenway until where ever you choose to get off. It is worth whatever extra distance you ride to get out of the traffic and into an environment that is much more pleasant.
I have tried some lesser known routes, especially south of the intersection of Nepperhan and Yonkers Ave. and down to VC Park, PM me and I will email them to you or post them here. I don't have access to the text right now anyway. Good luck with any possible house hunting. My wife and I sold our place and it's off to the far boondocks for us.

New York City has an official bicycling map on the net.
See Westchester Co. North Trail and South Trail.
There is also alot of stuff about bike routes for bear mountain which you could also use.
The first months be very cautious until you really know the traffic and road conditions. If night riding is possible make sure you have a very bright headlamp to avoid potholes.
A paper street level road map can be very helpful.
