Hi, as a newbie to folding bikes, I have - I hope - a simple question. I've read here and on the Dahon forum that you can pack better by taking the wheels off and it's just about a must if you have a dualdrive. My bike is a 2006 Speed TR and I am worried about taking the back wheel off, messing up the gears and not being able to put it back on again.
Do you simple loosen the axle, take it out and there you go, and is fitting it back on simple too? Will the gears stay together, or fall apart. I'm rather worried that I might end up with a bike in bits at a foreign airport or hotel and not a bike mechanic in sight!

It's not hard at all. Take a close look at the manual and practice a few times and you will have it down.

Basically, shift to the lowest hub gear and remove the click box (there is a black button you push up on then pull straight out). Then remove the pin that goes into the hub (standard screw counter-clockwise), put it somewhere safe. Loosen both bolts with 15mm wrench and pull the wheel off.

Assembly is opposite, but be sure to remember the pin that goes into the hub does not need to be torqued very tight, I usually hand tighten it then give it maybe a 1/4 turn more to snug it in. The click box can be a little tricky to get back on, but I usually discover when I'm having problems it is because the cable housing has slid out of the shifter and is not providing enough slack, so before you put it back on make sure all of the cable housing is where it is supposed to be. After it is all installed, you just have to verify that the gears are aligned, usually the are just fine or only require slight adjustment.

Hey, that's great, Loch and F&T. Haven't tried it yet but seems pretty cleared explained. In fact, the click box you mentioned had come off on Saturday when I was adjusting something else and couldn't figure out how to put it back on and keep it in place without simply taping it on. Will leave some clear, unhurried, concentration time at the weekend to try it out. Many, many thanks. David

Actually, no, it looks like it was just a little piece on the corner of the box that became attached on Sat.

If you are talking about that little black plastic piece that is on the click box, mine comes off very easily also (I think it is a dust cover or something, or for looks).
