Classic & Vintage - decals...tape...stuck on my nos frame...

i just got an old Miele frame and there is some tape that is over the decals.
when i try to peel it off it just tears and mostly stays stuck on the tubing.
i tried some warm water and that didn't help much.

any advice for getting the tape off without hurting the paint or the decals.

Use a hair dryer on hot to heat them up...they'll peel right off. Your decals are most likely under the clear coat, so they won't be affected. If they are over the clear coat...be careful. You can tell with your fingernail.

Bestine. It's an adhesive "deactivator", basically, it soaks in, loosens the adhesive and then once dry, the adhesive gets sticky again. Did that make sense?

It's used for mounting artwork onto boards. If you mess up, you coat it in bestine and reposition.

It's sorta toxic, so wear gloves. But I have had good luck with it to remove decals, and it doesn't ruin the artwork.

BTW, what kind of tape is it? If it's plastic coated (i.e. electric tape), most solvents wont work. You better off with the hairdryer method, or even better, a EDIT *heat* gun.

It's plain toxic, just not as bad as the "original" formula, now banned, which was just benzene, hence the name. I use Nitrile gloves. Lighter fluid (for Zippos not BBQs) is cheaper and easier to find than Bestine, and works better as a glue remover, too...use nitrile gloves.

I'm sure you meant "heat gun", but no: the guns I use get much too hot too fast, you could damage the paint or start a fire...you'll do fine with a regular hair dryer.

the tape is like masking tape, the decals are not clearcoated over. i might give the wd40 a try, lighter fluid is also a thought, i use that to deactivate adhesive on tape when regripping golf clubs, that will work i bet.

You dirty dog. You got a nice one there. It's always easy to discover the young guys on here. They are "digital" savy when it comes to taking and posting pics.

honestly, if the decals aren't clear coated, I would go the bestine route. That's what it was made for, and I've never had it damage a print or decal from contact. When I say toxic, that's relative. Sorta like paint thinner. You should wear gloves, but if it touches you, you aren't gonna melt or anything. If that was the case, my hands would be long gone.

He-he...I almost bid on that very one, but glad it's going to a good home, I don't really need it but thought it might be something cudak888 was looking for. I'm thinking that brown paper stuff was the backing for the cut out decals themselves... which for some reason didn't get removed. Maybe the idea was that it would protect the decals until it got to the showroom, but they weren't expecting the frame to sit like that for 20 years?
