Southern California - Why do cars honk when you ride in a group?

I was riding the Montrose ride last saturday (or at least for a while before I was dropped)...

I noticed a lot of cars honk their horns as we passed by (they were on the opposite side of traffic). I was wondering why they do that? Have any of you honked your horn at a group of cyclists? Why?

I used to get that a lot, but then I stopped wearing my "Honk if you're horny" jersey.

They honk because you are in their way, and they have to pay attention to you and think about you.

I like to think that they're saying "good morning". Sometimes its actually true.

Were you there on Huntington near Rosemead, I think, when we (all 150 of us) were stopped at the traffic signal when a small group of construction guys working on a 2 story condo project started firing their nail guns at the roof top (not at us) as a sign of approval?......(and I bet at the same time they were cracking queer jokes at us among themselves..:p).....:D

Probably 50/50, some in support and some trying to say get off of my road. I don't honk because I don't want to distract a pack of cyclists. I'd feel guilty if it spooked one and he took out half the pack just because I beeped hello.

I only honk at them if I'm packin' Krispy Kremes.

I have plenty of drivers honk and many pasengers shout and give the thumbs up when I'm on the road. Especailly while climbing up the mtns. Once in a while, someone will honk when they are about 5 yards behind me. I wish they wouldn't do that cause I've almost soiled my shorts a few times. I get pissed but then see the thumbs up so I can't give 'em the finger!:eek:

Drivers that honk on the other side of the road are saying hi, good job, keep going, etc.
Drivers that honk after they pass you are also saying hi.

Drivers that slow down and yell "Get off of the ****** road you ******s!", are decent people with low self esteem.
