General Cycling Discussion - My 2-year old can finally pedal his tricycle

He got his tricycle for his 1st birthday but not until yesterday that he was finally able to actually pedal the thing. I was thrilled to see him ride his bike on the street (we live in a court).

At first it was kinda frustrating because his feet kept slipping off the pedals after 3 or 4 strokes (His legs are just long enough to touch the pedal). So, what to do?.... I duct-tape his feet to the pedals :D . It's never too early to ride clipless. Man, what a difference. At the end of the ride, he could "climb" our driveway all the way :)

That is awesome! Congrats to the little guy :)

That is really good my son used his feet till he was about 3 years old if I remember correctly! Used his feet to push on the ground and not using pedals.

My son just turned 2 last week. He knew the idea of pedaling for a while but unable to do that because his legs was too short. Most likely he watched me pedal my bike :) . He is such a copier.

That's great! I'd love to see a photograph! Its probably the cutest thing in the world!

My son's three, I've got to try the duct tape thing. He has no problem going down the driveway (slight decline) but his feet slip coming back up!

Just make sure you watch him ALL the time. I am fully aware that even tricycle can become unstable in some situations (e.g. going downhill). Use it as a training tool only.

ditto... i've got a 2 1/2 yr old daughter who hasn't yet got the hang of it. I'm gonna give it a shot too!

What worries me a little bit about duct taping feet to the pedals is that when coming down a hill, the legs might start moving to fast for the child. I remember riding my tricycle and going down hills and putting my legs out due to the speed.

that's great, we all started with great difficulty, my son Miguel, who is 5 years old, doesn't want to go to his school, he would wake up in the morning and will asked me no school today, I want to ride my bike, althought I have to buy him his own bike, his bike right now is a loaner from the Bloor Mcmillan Rehab Center, this I really have to buy him a good bike,,,,

Ditto. My son is 28 months and his feet slip off of the pedals and he resorts to pushing. I thought of strapping his feet to the pedals but we live in a very hilly neighborhood and I have feers of him starting down a big hill (like our driveway) and his little legs not being able to keep up. I would have a real hard time explaining that to my wife.

When my son first tried riding his trike he pedaled in reverse for a long time, I think because short legs can manage a down stroke on the reverse side before they are long enough to get to a down stroke on the front side of the circle. He did learn and still bikes now, 25 years later.

I think the solution might be to install a brake on the tricycle. That would be good!
