It'd be pretty cool if you guys added a thumbnail image bbcode which puts in thumbnails of the linked image.. and make it so quoted thread with image have their [img] tags changed to that thumbnail one. This would prevent people from quoting posts with a bunch of pictures and cluttering thread needlessly.

I saw this done on some vbulletin boards.

Does it work with images not hosted on the server, but rather hotlinked from another server?

All of them, it just adds width and height to the image, letting the browser do the resizing.
