Commuting - Damn it was windy on my ride home tonight.

Winds from 15-25mph...generally blowing straight at me or from the left as I was riding up my regular route. I averaged 14.6mph which is pretty much meaningless because of the wind. :D Anyway, I set out in my tights, jersey, arm warmers and vest but I found myself too warm about 5 miles from home so I stopped and stripped off the tights and vest and stuffed them in my backpack. It's 59 degrees here right now.

I wear the same kit for 59 degrees as I wear for 100 degrees. Shorts. Shoes. Jersey.

I had some nasty wind going home on Tuesday. My average speed dropped from 16mph to 14mph and the ride took about 10 minutes longer than normal (12 mile). Haven't ridden in winds like that before - it felt almost like I had bonked - didn't matter what gear, or what cadence - the bike wasn't going faster than 14mph.

I was standing in the shade when I left work and it felt cooler than it was. As soon as I warmed up I was too warm so I stopped as soon as I got to one of the longer climbs and shed the tights and vest. I kept the arm warmers though. I hate being cold on a ride but usually when I set out if I'm comfortable to begin I end up being too warm rather quickly. If I'm a bit cold starting out I am usually fine for the entire ride as long as conditions don't change.

BTW-It's 45 degrees this morning. Brrrr...:D It is clear though and there is just a hint of a breeze, just enough to move the leaves on the palm trees in my backyard.

Another rule is that if you are comfy when you first get on the bike, you are probably overdressed.

59 degrees?!?!?!? My warmest ride this year has been ~38 degrees! Although tomorrow looks like it's going to hit 60 for the ride home.

Two weeks ago in Cleveland, I biked home from work on a Thursday evening. I had been on a business trip, and had my pannier filled with clothes, and I had my laptop on the other side of my rack. I was well loaded down...:p

It was 25 deg F and snowing and dark (about 8 pm at night). No big deal, but the wind was gusty and blowing at about 30 to 35 mph in my face and on one leg on the side. :o Geesh, that was a rough ride home. My top speed was about 12.:o :o :o

Of all the times I've commuted, even in below zero temps this winter, this was the most memorable. It was nuts.

I lived in Rochester for a year before moving to CA (I grew up in upstate NY). There's a reason I moved here. :D

For a large portion of my commute I am travelling north/south. Only the first couple miles and the last couple miles were into the wind last night, the rest of it was blowing at me from the side...which still slows me down some as my wheels are semi-aero.

That wind yesterday was a tailwind for me and occasionally a side wind. I averaged about 19mph heading home yesterday and hit a max speed of 34 on the platte without sprinting. he he
This happens like once or twice a year for me but that one was a doosey.
