Great Lakes - May 19th - Waterford to Kenosha/Racine

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Drumming up interest for Cheeseheads and BFNIC FIBs for the:
Kenosha/Racine Bike Club's ride to benefit the Washington Park Velodrome -- May 19th
Starts in Waterford, WI, which is a close trip for anyone in the Chicago northern 'burbs or from the town that Schlitz made famous. Info here (http://www.krbikeclub.com/Benefit_Ride/Annual%20ride%202007.htm).
Looks like a great chance for the Milwaukee folks to meet up with the Northern Illinois crew. 10, 25, 44, 62, and 100 Mile Routes are available, so that means that Hipcycler can come out and not have to ride a full century (he's been there, ridden that, thankyouverymuch.)
Who's in?
Hipcycler
04-19-07, 07:25 AM
....seriously, a 100 miles....six hours in the saddle....seven hours of your life gone forever.....enough already. Life's too short to do that again!
Now...gotta run, I hear cartoon socks are 15% off at the Time-Warner Store!
Hipcycler

....oh, even though that ride offers shorter routes, I'm booked that day.
You know, when you are a wildly-popular, almost cult-like figure in your community there are a lot of groups tugging at your apron strings wanting you at their events.
...and get this, sometimes they pay you $500.00 to hang out for two hours. It's called an appearance fee, and it buys me nice new kits to wear on those 'shorter' rides of mine! :)
Hipcycler
04-19-07, 07:28 AM
...BRILLIANT!!! That's IT!
I'll start appearing at these BFNIC events for an appearance fee.....yeah, that's the ticket.
...let the abuse begin.

We can pay you in Shot Blocks. But only after we've opened a pack and then you can have a few. ;)
You know, the funny thing about getting to know someone before you realize they are a well-known public figure is that the whole celebrity thing is defused. You might be the Biggest Name in Milwaukee Radio, but you'll always be first and foremost a fellow cyclist to the masses on bikeforums.net. And that's a compliment. :)
[edit... have fun at Ned's Furniture Barn or Whatever Kia Dealer that day. Make sure to post the kit you pick out with that appearance fee! $500 might get you one pair of those Ah-Sos Swiss bibs.... ]

I would guess it's relatively flat if most of the route is east of the Fox River and the land is predominantly corn, cabbage, sod farming. Any ideas of the route this takes?

There are some nice roads in eastern Racine County (5 mile road, and 7 mile if you don't mind the cars). "KR" is pretty good, but the rest of Kenosha County I'm not too familiar with.

I rode it 2 years ago - met Richard Schwinn at one of the stops. At the time it started on the waterfront in Kenosha headed south to the state line, swept around through Waterford and then on to near Racine and back to Kenosha.
Last year they switched the start to Waterford. I decided not to go last year because I couldn't get anyone else to go with, it was a long drive, etc. I'll definitely go if others are going as well. Would be nice to meet up with some of our Northern BF friends.
I know I still have my cue sheet from the ride a couple of years ago. When I get a chance I'll routeslip or Bikely it and post a link.

I will chip in some of the nasty tasting hammer gel we got at one of the rides last year. Unless I was eating a pack of sunscreen and just thought it was hammer gel.

I've some family obligations in the PM, so would need to be done by noon. Any BFNICs interested in an early start for a metric?

The last cue sheet I have from this ride (2 years ago) shows all routes together through a couple of rest stops. 100 is achieved by adding a loop. At the very least we can all ride with you until the split.
I was hoping that is the case so I can ride most of the 62 with the 100 milers. If someone here wants to go 44, instead of 62 I would opt to ride with them an cut my ride a little shorter. 100 is not in the pic for me, my long ride so far has been the 33 at the first annual with a few 20 milers sprinkled in since then, not enough saddle time to punish myself just yet.

If I can make this ride it would be for the 44. I'm just not sure it is worth the drive for a 44 miler.

Hey now....I'm coming all the way from Elgin. It's worth the drive to see some friends.:D
54 miles from our area on a Sunday morning of all highway- 45 minute drive. 44 mile ride. 45 minute drive.
We can always make the ride an easy 62 and make it worth your while. The boys from BFNIC ride at a nice moderate pace!! :D

Maybe I could ride with both feet clipped in the first 44 miles and than unclip my right leg and just let it dangle while I power through the last 18 miles with just my left leg! :D
I went 25 miles last night and my knee felt good until this morning. I've got two more weekends to try and push some miles and see how my knee reacts. Chances are I can be convinced to go 44.
I will ride 44 if that is what your knee will handle.

If we drive up together I have no problem hanging out at the finish for you if you want to ride the metric. We'll figure it out closer to the 19th.
Looks like this is the next ride up, a few more riders in the paceline would be nice. What nicer way to spend a Saturday morning on a nice ride in one of the more scenic suburbs of Chicago-- Wisconsin.

You know there has to be at least a couple of forays(sp) under the cheese curtain every year. Now if we could only sober enough of them up to realize that there are actually roads on the other side.....

.....making note of any Flatlander cheese jokes as he trims invite list to the lake house party....
Dude...when you got what we got, why venture south to the land of the "L" tracks?
Now, back to the Hip Invitational planning....lets see....after the wise crack about Wisconsin, the list somewhat changes....hmmmm.....
CyLowe97--Brings some plactic wine cups
Dave342--Brings a bag of chips
aham--Brings some suntan lotion
Flywolf--Brings a lawn chair
and ah....oh yeah....
Psimet--Brings T-bone steaks for 20 people.....yeah.....that's the ticket.

Hip,
seems that you have t the other way around. Seeing as that you'll be glued to Psimet and aham's wheel all day, isn't it YOU who should be making the payments?
....(scratches botto from invite list)....OK, time for me to drop the hammer now and talk some trash.
Between the upgrades to the Klein and my intensive training program of almost a thousand miles of quality riding this spring, those guys will be lucky to keep up with me. That's why I am going to have to put extra time and effort into making the Q-sheets of the route so they don't get lost back there on their own.
How many of them have finished 72nd out of a 120 racers, huh?
I rest my (very weak) case!

...you know, the thing about those models.....I was never sure how to paint the parts.
First, while on the plastic holder thing? But then when you clip them off you get spots where they were held on. Take them off first? But then how do you hold them for painting? Puzzling.
Oh...as for the kits...come on botto...who could top my Master Lock racing team kit with the Quickstep bibs.
And for those of you who would like to see botto's masterful re-take of that kit, PM him, because he can't post it here. I do not believe I have ever laughed harder than when I saw the genius of that little devil in what was his best piece of work ever here. (You should send me that jpeg....it was taken off the thread before I could even save it.)

Thus speaking volumes about this whole OCP idea....

Oh what a beautiful morning!
You may have me on the speed there Hip. I was off the bike all winter and only have about a month of riding in this year.
Of course I began commuting the 50 mile round trip to work at least twice a week now....and I have a 3 metric and one imperial century under my belt during that time....One being the fastest I have ever ridden....
...I've dropped 6 pounds in the last 2 weeks.....Only 4-5 pounds away from my mid season weight....lots of room for improvement....
I'm starting to think that if aham and I set our mind to it we might be able to cause some pain. Especially since we know we won' be riding anything long - I mean Hip is riding with us.... ;)

Meh. There was something like a 45 mph tailwind.
Hell, even I was spinning at 30+ mph with little effort and chatting with Psimet who was about 8 bike lengths back of me for portions of that oh-so-brief westward road.
The silence of a tailwind is eerie and lush.
But anyway, yeah, aham's a monster.
