Hi all

Purchased a beat up Austrian made Sears Roebuck 3 speed that I plan to restore. Thought it would be a nice touch to restore the original decal design

Heres whats left of it on the bike:

Working in Photoshop to recreate the design and make a stencil for me to paint the design on (none of that decal nonsense). Heres what I've created as of today:

If anyone has any other designs they want me to try to recreate Ill give it a try

how are you planning to cut out the stencil? By hand or do you have access to a machine that can do it from the photoshop file?

For stuff like that photoshop can be easy, but illustrator is the best way to go when recreating flat artwork.

Paying Mike Swantak to do it is even easier.

Find a place that does laser cut decals. Reverse you decal out and it will work great as a stencil. You only get one shot with those, though.

Don't be too thankful until it's printed; there's still plenty of time for everything to go to hell in a handcart.

If painting the design, you should use Adobe Illustrator, ie; vector files. Any good sign shop can use that file to cut spray mask vinyl for you. You may get a few sets, as some shops will have a minimum purchase of like $50. They're usually not lazer cut, just a computer assissted Xacto knife. Good for doing unusual lettering and such. Or flames! :D
But there is only so fine a detail that they can cut, so decals are the way to go for intricate, multi colored art, especially coats of arms type illustrations. :p

Dwoloz, here's a sample of Illustrator files and spray mask vinyl. This was a "corporate job" as you can tell.
So there are NO decals! Just airbrushed art. And lots of clear, sanded, and cleared again.
I'm not sure which was more, the bike (a new Trek somethingorother) or the PAINT JOB!?!

:roflmao:

Good luck with all that! :)

I can think of many ways to throw money at this problem but I'm looking to do everything at zero cost. I'll be cutting this out myself

In that case, I suggest getting a roll of this AMAZING tape I found through Mickey Harris.
It's 18" wide and you can lay it down on just about any shaped surface.
It's micro thin so it's very easy to cut by hand. Light pressure with a fresh blade and you don't disturb the base color as much.
It is also highly chemical resistant, so you can use many types of paints with it.

You might also check with some sign shops and get a couple of feet of spray mask vinyl.
Cut the design and then apply the masks using tweezers.

And if you are doing that level of work, see if anybody you know has an airbrush you could borrow.
WARNING! an airbrush CAN be addicting! :p

Have fun ... & post some pics! :)

Sorry about the hijack but does your bike look like this? This is my Austrian built Iverson 3 speed which someone said was also rebadged and sold by Sears.

I love how clean that looks. Very acceptable hijack.

The chainwheel and fork crown are dead giveaways to its Austrian origins. Nothing wrong with that; our governor is from Austria.

But then, so was Hitler...

The VERY thing my best photo instructor said when I turned in the first project.
I nearly spit my false teeth into the moniter when I read that!
