Strong, Light, Cheap - Pick Any Two
I hear this all of the time from my LBS. You can have two but you can never have all three. I first thought it was BS but after looking for stuff for my 220 pound rump I realize this to be the truth.

Definitely go with strong and cheap. Light won't factor in until you've lost some weight and gained a respectable amount of cardiovascular fitness. Well, at least it should.

My heaviest bike weighs a whopping 15 pounds more than my father's racing frame; but he's lost 20 pounds riding. Weight really doesn't matter anyway, except for racing or bragging rights: the bicycle would be the most efficient way to move yourself even if it weighed 100 pounds.

It seems most of my friends pay heavy money to shave off grams from their bikes yet they could drop 10-15 pounds. I've never figured that out.

Maybe they're just "wannabes" :D
Or maybe they have enough cash and figure it's easier to shave weight off the bike than it is off the rider.

Yeah, I wonder about that, you get guys that will say, I paid $500 for a crank that was 2g lighter then a $250 crank. You look at them and think, gee buddy, you could lose that Molson Muscle* for free, it weighs more then the whole freaking bike. For those of you outside Canada, here in Canada Molson is a brand of beer, a beer gut is often called a Molson Muscle. I had a neighbour growing up, where it was the only muscle he had:rolleyes:

Well it is not very different than someone owning a 4 wheel drive and never going offroad....or some kid having a 500hp Honda Accord to drive to school...Soccer Mom driving a hummer..
People do a LOT of thinks that don't make the most sence but it makes them feel good....I am sure you have yours....:)

Not to hijack the thread...
When I was in high schoolI used to always get stuck behind a soccer mom in a range rover who would slow down to about 2 miles an hour because she was afraid of the bumps crossing an old railroad crossing. like come-on lady its a range-rover... it was more or less designed to cross african savana...
Our repair shop (different product line) has a sign up that says: Good, fast, cheap, pick any two.
