Bicycle Mechanics - Just bought these....think they will be ok???

Just bought two of these front FORK MOUNTS (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3611191228&category=22692) to use to build a rack for the top of my SUV.

Do ya think they will work ok, or should I be very careful using something like this to hold our bikes on with?? Would really hate to have them fly off going down the highway!! :(

I have two bolted to the bed of my truck, and have never had any problems. I am not sure how this would hold up in the airflow, the bed of my truck receives minimal disturbance from the air. Most roof racks have more then one contact point to the bike, usualy an arm that connects the downtube of the bike to the rack, in addition to the fork mount.

Bad idea. There made to mount in truck beds. You will also need a tray of some type to hold the rear wheel. I would look into a roof rack. I have seen ones that bolt on to the stock cross bars for about $50. I would hate to read about your bike meeting the highway at 65mph.
If you want to something cheap, I have two old roof rack tray I don’t need.

I have a rooftop rack now that uses a separate upright to hold the downtube but I just hate the stupid thing. Thought I could convert it pretty easily using these mounts.

Do they have the fork mount like this already on them? Like I said, I already have a rooftop rack so I already have the trays.......it just doesn't attach the bike by the front fork. It uses a big arm that swings up and attaches to the downtube. I REALLY HATE THAT RACK!!! :mad: Just thought that I could convert it to a fork mount rack with these for mounts I just bought. If you still don't think it's a good idea I will not do it. :(

Dragracer........make sure your forkmount is first mounted on some sort of rail or bar if you're thinking rooftop. These were primarily designed to bolt directly onto sheetmetal, like on a truckbed, for example. But you should be able to rig something up quite easily. These are quite versatile and can be used in many different ways.

OK let me say this again....I already have a rooftop rack.

I will be bolting these fork mounts to the front crossbar of the rack. I will be using the rear wheel tray and strap that I already have to hold the rear wheel in place. As far as I can tell it'll be the same as the Thule/Yakima/Whatever rooftop racks that attach the bikes by the front fork. Still don't see why it's a "bad idea". :(

I don't think its a bad idea, I just don't know if I would put 100% faith behind the design. For a roof rack, I would be much more comfortable with that arm holding onto the down tube.

If bolted properly, I don't see anything wrong with the setup. I once mounted one of these on a crossbar and just a very short rear wheel tray six feet back for my tandem. I had this setup atop my fiberglass truckbed lid. Held up well...

jus drill a couple of holes to mount the darn thing, and use good steel bolts. Oh, and make sure you use threadlocker. It will work like a charm. I love having things rigged!
