I think it would be pretty cool if we would all post pics of our commute, taken from google earth. Would be a great way to show others what kind of terrain we have to go through to get to work; through mountains or flat plains. Or through suburbs or the middle of a huge city.

My commute is 2.75 miles each way (as the bike rides).

3 miles exactly (door to door). Slightly different route home on a less busy road than the main one I use at 5:00am. Very flat except for the railroad crossing.

And just for kicks, heres my ride to school in South Africa. 2.5 miles with a big dip in the middle and by the school.

Ok, I downloaded Google Earth (I NEVER use Google) and the route it plotted is nowhere close to my actual route. Can I easily change the plotted route?

You can go through and create a custom path, you just keep clicking new points along the roads or trails you take and it will create a line. You can change the color of the line, the width, whatever. The function is on the tool bar and it's called "Create a path". You can zoom in on your house, click on your house, then move the map around by using the arrow keys and clicking on new points to change the direction of the line. Keep moving and clicking until you have reached your destination. Once you have it figured out you can hide the roads if you want, then zoom out a bit so you can see the kind of terrain you have around you.

Also, by holding down the middle mouse button you can change the angle of the view, so if you have any hills or mountains or valleys, it will show those in 3D.

Red is my "to the bus" commute. Blue is how I get to or from downtown on my own (only one trip so far, it's a long ride!)

Here's mine in Sacramento CA. Mine starts from the South and I work my way up to downtown to the North.

16 miles one way. Half the time I'll ride my bike to the bus stop in the morning (since buses don't exist in my neck of the city) and just cycle home after work. The views while riding are just plain ugly, nothing to look at but traffic.

If I were to drive, it takes me about an hour just to get to work. Pretty sad.

There's was another thread like this waaaay back. Many of the links in it are probably stale by now, though. Praise to Google Maps, USGS and GPSVisualizer.

Is there a link to the web site where you can create a commute route?

If you know the intersections or addresses of each turn on the route you can do it with the "get directions" feature of Google Maps.

Cool idea for a thread!

Here are my current commute in Cleveland, and then my new commute (from August) at my new job in Columbia, MO (which seems to be a great bike town). Cleveland is about 3/4 a mile (barely a commute!)http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x112/genespleenio/commutecleveland.jpg

Columbia will be a little over a mile (again, a shorty, so I'll do an aerial loop-de-loop on the way in):
