Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

A few of us have made a last minute decission to start in Lakeview Terrace and do so cal's version of the "Tourmalet", Little Tujunga to Camp 9. Not a long ride but lots of climbing and below the snow line. I like to do Santa Clara Divide road on this too, it's one of those "I can't believe I rode up here on a bike " rides. Awesome views of the SF Valley and Santa Clarita. Saturday 4/21 8am Lakeview Terrace Rec Center. 11075 Foothill.

I may join on this, Bob, if I can get my lazy butt motivated. I'll let you know tonight. But regardless, I'm sure it will be a beautiful ride up there! ;)

BUT I will be at the Conquer the Canyons Charity ride/race this weekend!
Have a great ride!

Seriously considering this VB. I keep checking the weather and it's still supposed to be snowing in Angelus Oaks at 6 a.m. I don't know that I want to suffer in the freezing cold up at Onyx Summit in the name of training when I can get some good climbing in with you, BELOW the snow line!!! What's the water situation up there?

Brandy,
Its a great ride, from the valley side from Foothill to the Camp 9 fire camp, its around 30 miles total with approx. 4150 feet of climbing. From Foothill if you have 2 full bottles you will make it no problem.

Where is Camp 9 in relation to the Mt Gleason ride?Camp 9 is up Little Tujunga where as Mt.Gleason is off Big T and Angeles Forest. The road to Gleason is Santa Clara Divide Road. We will be on a different stretch of it tomorrow. It starts at Little T/Sand Canyon there at Bear Divide.

Valleygirl is coming! There is no water on the climb and I never tried to get it at the fire station, but you probably could get some there, those guys are pretty cool. You could come back to Little T and go down to Soledad Canyon to the stores there and then climb back over, or even do a loop out there before climbing back over.
I'll decide in the morning when I see the weather.

Alright...gimme the lowdown. Nothing else this weekend looks good.
Last weekend I did May Canyon Truck Trail up to the fire station (ouch!) then took a left & down Little T into Santa Clarita & home. Previously, I have gone up Sand Canyon/Little T over into the Valley & the 7-Eleven near Foothill Blvd. Looking on Yahoo/Google Maps I can't find anything labeled "Camp 9" & where does Santa Clara Divide come into play?
Estimate on the total mileage? I may ride to the start from home (Santa Clarita/Canyon Country).

You busted me...:o Yes, burnout is hitting me a little, which is why I am stepping back from the bicycle. Plus, I don't have a single clean dish in my apartment (I might even humor you guys and take pics of my filthy apartment and post them) I'll do a before and after...:D

To all who showed up (Kathy, John, Jon, Bob, Doug, Brandy)...great beginning. I got home safe-n-sound...not a problem at all. I hope I didn't worry you all. I was fine.
On hindsight, I have had some intestinal upset the past 2 days. So, I must have some sort of little bug. I just felt fine this AM and didn't think much of it. Of course, only being 95% healthy, climbing up Little T let me know this was a bad idea!
Hope to see you all again soon.

Glad that you made it home safely and I'm sorry that you had to bail. It was a beautiful ride, and despite VB's promise that we'd be below the snow line, we saw some patches up at the top of Santa Clara Divide Road. They came in handy to wash the mushed banana off of my hands after I dumped it out of my jacket pocket. :p Yeah...umm...bananas don't take well to being sat upon, just in case you were wondering. :o As we were climbing I was enjoying the views and VB says to me "you're taken by my mountains, aren't you?" He couldn't have been more correct. It was gorgeous, the roads were quiet and this ride was just what I needed today. Oh, by the way...it was an ass kicker...by mile 18.7 we had already climbed 4500 ft if I recall correctly. The two John's and I skipped the climb to Camp 9 so we could get home earlier...but VB, Valleygirl and Doug were still out there climbing. Thanks for a great ride everyone!!!

Today was impossible to dress for... cold when we started, burning up on the climb up Fermwood, cold again on the descent. But as long as that rain moved out, I'm not complaining!

It was a put it on, take it off, put it on, take it off day with the jacket! The descents were cold and I was a sweaty mess on the climbs. I didn't mind stopping though because bigjohn was on the same stripping/dressing schedule and it gave me a chance to snap a few pictures of the view along the way. :)
I have to say that I am SO glad that I did this ride instead of the Breathless Agony workers route that I was supposed to do today. My legs just weren't feeling great (could it still be from MC last weekend??) and if I had done that ride, I would have been pushing myself to beat my last time. Instead, I got to take it easy, enjoy the views and good company and experience some mountains I've never had the chance to climb before. I'm ready to go back, I think I'm in love.

It was such a nice ride George, I was kicking myself for not calling Tiff last night to let her know about this ride (she thought I was doing BA again)...she would have loved it. I ended up with under 50 miles and 6500 ft of climbing and I was home by 3:00 p.m. which made Grandma very happy. :p :D

Cool pix Brandy! Nice looking climb!:D
Oh...and it was funny. We were descending Santa Clara Divide Road and my arms were aching from braking the whole way down...I was thinking to myself "this is worse than Deer Creek!" and right then, Valleygirl says "this is as bad as Deer Creek!" I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was thinking that. It's a great climb on a very narrow road, paved but obviously unmaintained and it's an obstacle course of big rocks, gravel, dirt and potholes that was sometimes difficult to navigate on the climb up, so you can imagine that the descent has to be taken with much caution. I have to say that despite all of the debris, I loved climbing this road...I'm wondering what the average grade was because almost every time I looked down it seemed to be 9%. It seemed like our own personal bike path out there, we only saw one car on the side of the road the entire time we were on it.
damn...I can't shut up about this ride, can I? I have to comment on the peeps now...everyone was GREAT! VB had me laughing, he said to me "Up at Camp 9 there are a bunch of cute firemen, and they're not even convicts!" :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:
big john was great company on the way up to the top of Santa Clara Divide Road. I'm not a huge talker when I climb, but I loved listening to him! :)
Valleygirl...we need to have our ex-***** session when VB isn't dropping you. ;) Doug it was great to meet you. John, good to see you again...you are now dubbed "the speedy one"...lol!
Thanks again everyone, for a WONDERFUL ride!
