... but probably not
How effective is it to use calipers to measure spindles and spindle eyes in order to determine compatibility?
Like most geeks, I've managed to accumulate more than my fair share of nice old cranksets and krunky, dodgy BBs. I want to know, once and for all, if crankset(x) will fit BB(y), and since no comprehensive database exists, here I am.
From what I understand, older French (e.g. Stronglight, Nervar), Italian (Campy, Ofmega, Gipiemme, etc), and some Japanese (Sugino, some Suntour) will fit pre '94 Campy (Old ISO?) taper BBs. I'm unclear as to how well modern Campy cartridge BBs will match up with these cranks.
Harris Cyclery has a wide range of "Japanese" bb spindles, which I take to mean JIS. IIRC, the JIS square taper is fatter than that of ISO, so these spindles won't be a good match for the cranksets mentioned above. They also have TA BBs, but I think that they're JIS too.
Basically, is there a BB available that will fit these older cranks? Phil wood, I suppose, but those are a darned expensive solution. Help?
