General Cycling Discussion - Bibs or half shorts?

All my roadie friends wear bibs -- as do I. All my MTB friends wear half shorts. So... what is it?

MTB=half shorts, unless you're hung like a donkey. Bibs are not practical at all, I hate them. If you get caught short and are busting for a Tom Tit, it means you have to practically undress in the woods. This is not much good in a long race with lots of contestants whizzing past.

Get some decent shorts with a high back and pee with ease!:p

I drink so much water, I'd never survive in Bibs.

I've never had to take a leak or a dump while riding. We call one of the guys Baker because he ALWAYS has to take a dump before we start a trail. I wonder what my problem is. I've gone a whole week without taking a dump, but I don't think you guys want to know about that.

Well, it wasn't that I didn't need to go, I just held it. Have you guys ever tried taking a dump on an open bay toilet in a latrine that over 100 guys use?

It is a true proverb too, I pay dearly for holding on.

Getting back to the original topic, bibs would simply be too hot here for nine months of the year. Oh yeah, and the amount of water that I drink means usually have to stop at least once on longer rides to empty out my bladder.

Well I'm not sure if Baggies are considered half shorts but all I have to say is that Spandex is horrible looking.
I say baggies all the way, especially if you are mountain biking.

And for God sakes, if you are wearing spandex put some shorts on after the ride is over.

I was ready to purchase my first bibs this fall... but i too love to drink water! How do you get around this problem with bibs?

Well, I like them. I find they fit me better and they do a pretty good job of keeping the boys from moving around. The best thing is that they don't ride down and I don't feel like I'm being bisected by a drawstring. I would never go back to half-shorts except off-road. YMMV.

I like bib shorts too, but they are hard to find around here, and prohibitively expensive anyway. They are MUCH more comfortable, and on commuting rides I don't need to make pit stops so they would be ideal. Are there any good deals on bib shorts anywhere at the moment? I could be in the market for some new shorts soon.

As far as the call of nature goes, one solution is to wear the bibs over your shirt, facilitating easy removal.

How can I be Mr Spanky unless I wear half-shorts?
