Southern California - Saga of the Small Bike Search

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Knee-over-pedal-spindle (i.e KOPS) is only really a rough guideline. Go read Peter White's essay on Bike fit (http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/fitting.htm). The saddle position should be more dictated by the balance of your upper body as it hinges at the waist.
Markg,
Hey that's a good read..I'll have to admit someone with his experience does know more than someone that hasn't had to fit probably hundreds or thousands of people in this lifetime. I should have prefaced it clearer when I gave the 5 points for starting off getting someone "in the ballpark". I never meant that this was to be adhered to with strictest of discipline and please forgive me if it came across that way.:) I also went on to say, "5.making minor adjustments based on your pedaling style to the seat height, cleat position, fore and aft in the saddle and even picking the correct width handlebar.
All these things are very important and should not be overlooked when fitting even a production bike. A "Good" bike shop should be willing and offering to change out things that don't fit. Some even offer you a "credit" towards upgrades or changes if things cost more."
You have to start somewhere and yes many times you do deviate off of what "should be" and what "feels right" heck remember Chris Boardman and his unorthordox position/ (extreme example) I always tell people that "no matter what someone tells you, if you're not comfortable on your bike you can't go fast and these things should only be a rough guide to get you close and from there your body will tell you what is best."
Anyway I was trying to help and No I hadn't read Peter White's article. I did however also find Keith Bontrager's article on the same subject. http://www2.bsn.de/Cycling/articles/kops.html both these articles touch on the topic of (KOP) and also bring in the idea of fitting for purpose (racing, tourning etc.) I wondered if anyone even did any of these things as she was having such a hard time finding a frame to fit. I mentioned these things because I have heard of friends going into shops and after being handed a bike, told to stand over the top tube were asked, "you got room to lift the front tire off the ground?" followed by "yes" then the seat height was adjusted and told "there you go it fits, you want it?" lol In any case I'll add this to my quiver of dinner time conversation topics for first dates. It is cool that she did finally find something that fit! Oh and one last thing...you posted at 4AM!!! wow you wake up early!

UPDATE:
Sacha's finally coming along. After getting over the initial sticker shock I took her in to my mechanic, Manny, to get some build advice. I've decided to go with a Campagnolo Chorus compact double groupset with a 12-27 cassette (an Italian brand, forgot the name), Fulcrum Racing 3 wheels, Full Speed Ahead Wing Pro Compact handlebars 38cm and FSA K-Force 90mm stem. I'll keep my pedals and Selle San Marco tri saddle from my old bike until I find a more suitable road saddle.
Thanks for the GVH link, Luwin. I printed out the specs and brought it down. He took one look at those prices and his eyes bugged out. That price for the Fulcrum wheelset was far below his cost so I went ahead and ordered them. As for the components, he's going to talk to his Campy supplier on Thursday and will try to match the price. If he can get close, I'll go ahead and go with him, as I like to support a local LBS whenever possible. The 38cm bars are impossible to find at an LBS or even online – so they'll have to be ordered from FSA.
Thanks for everyone's support and advice. Hope to get Sacha up and rolling soon!

I hear you, Joy. I feel inclined to order through the LBS as much as possible, and I'd usually do so if it's not a monumental difference in price. My Fulcrum Racing 5 Evo's went for $325 via my LBS, and GVH had them for $250 - but I just went ahead with the LBS since they were building my bike. But the groupset would have been $100+ more, so I ordered through GVH - as much as I am for supporting the local shops, gotta feed the family somehow, and I'm sick of making multiple trips to the sperm bank on a weekly basis. Ok, kidding on the sperm bank part. ;)
Glad to see you're going with a compact ;) - and Campy, to boot. Your bike is going to be absolutely SICK. Dying with anticipation to see it. C'mon, can you throw a guy a bone here and at least post a pic or two of the module/frame?

Sweet!! Are you going to keep the Specialized compact crank that came with the S-Works module? Or going with the Chorus compact crank?

I think she just got the frameset, and not the module.

Not from the pic of that she posted of it in the "What's Up" thread:

Doh. Shouldn't it have come with handlebars/stem then?
EDIT: Never mind. Apparently, that's only on the regular S-Works.

^ lol she loves that bike so much she's sleeping with it! I would, but my wife already threatened to run it over with her car if she caught me in the shower with it (the idea was taken from another thread in the road forum)

I just had an unexpected sale of a painting I did years ago, which was sitting in storage. Looks like Sacha's wheelset and gruppo (and dinner, too) are covered! Whew!

Do you have a website with your artwork on it or something? Our walls are still bare, and my wife being an artist herself is picky as to what will be allowed to adorn them. She's thinking of going back to oil painting for a hobby, but she hasn't found the time yet.
