As a "red star" member I thought I had a few extra K of space for my avatar. The one I tried recently was about 26K and I got a message to the effect that the limit was 10K. I thought the red star limit was 100k. :(

Your avatar is still limited to 9.8 kilobytes. But you do now get to have it as big as 100 x 100 pixels, from 64 x 64 pixels. So you can make it bigger, but you still have to keep it pretty compressed.
