I've been riding my road bike for fitness for many years, but I want a more comfortable bike for riding recreationally with my 2 year old son. Can anyone recommend a really good hybrid or "street" bike that's relatively lightweight? Also, what's the best & safest child seat for a toddler?

Get yourself a Jamis Coda and a Copilot child seat and you and yours will both be living good....

I'd recommend a step through frame (lady's frame). You can't kick your leg over the child carrier, especially with the little one on board.

I've been coveting the Coda, so now you've confirmed it for me. Thanks!

You'll love it. Rode a couple thousand miles w/my 2-5 years old with that exact combo, city streets and touring. Comfortable, not too heavy, & reasonably fast. You might look at the sport version as well as the standard, frames the same, components a tiny bit better.
As for step through, would make mounting easier, but no big deal. Never knocked over the kids.
The copilot limo is a little nicer than the other model I think. Wider sides lets the kid rest head when they inevitably fall asleep.
I've been riding the Jamis Coda Sport and Rhode Gear Co-pilot combination for the last few months, while the tandem is out of commission (new baby means no tandem for a while). Both are great and, if you want to it is possible to put up to 35 mm tyres on the Coda for some trail riding.
