Returning to touring for the first time in 20 years and I have some questions.
First, I really like my spacious rear trunk. But if I use a trunk, where do I put the tent and mattress?

In a BOB trailer. When I tour with panniers I leave my trunk at home. This summer I'm bringing my BOB and this (http://www.amazon.com/Swagman-Whee-Rear-Bike-Carrier/dp/B000GTRJCM/ref=sr_1_6/104-0035423-4431119?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1177378441&sr=8-6)will be my trunk: http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/410D46Z48CL._AA280_.jpg (http://www.amazon.com/Swagman-Whee-Rear-Bike-Carrier/dp/B000GTRJCM/ref=sr_1_6/104-0035423-4431119?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1177378441&sr=8-6)
It locks, and I think it will be both squirrel and raccoon proof (not bear proof though.)

I've never used a BOB or a trunk, but I know people who have. I would say don't use the trunk or the BOB. BOB adds way too much weight, and a huge handlebarbag is good. They say that it's better to have more weight on the front than the back.

Nah, a BOB is great, especially if you're concerned about space. Just make sure you pack it low.
