Hey everyone! How's it going? Right now i'm a marine security guard stationed in Barbados. Athlete all my life and need something to do since i'm not into cricket :) . They don't play basketball or softball here either!!!So...since i've been here i've taking up the road biking "gig". I've been mountain biking for six years, but the roadie thing is new. Started back in February. I've already wiped out once here in a round-a-bout  . It had just finished raining and I was going maybe 10-12 mph (slowed down in traffic and still fell!!!). Next thing i know i'm sliding on my right leg for about ten feet. Been a week and there still isn't skin on the right side of my leg :) got me pretty good. They managed to fix my back rim (broke a spoke on the fall and it was all sorts of crooked). However, I'm going home in may...hopefully, and i've signed up for the Queen City Century. I started training on the 20th (the Century is May 20th). Today (despite how bad my leg was feeling) : ) i rode 39.5 miles. Was going for 40 since i did 22 before i bit it on the round-a-bout last week.
Only concerns i have...is my right hand, neck, & lower back. Tail bone didn't hurt too much surprising enough. But, my right hand.....thumb and point finger always gets that tingly feeling and it'll stay numb for awhile. This was my longest ride yet and it's still numb...(440 pm and I finished my ride at 0800). The left hand doesnt do it...think it's because the nerve in that hand is dead anyway from it being slammed in a car door when i was young. That hand never goes numb!!! I got gloves...still doesn't help my right hand...and i've read some postings in here and tried re-adjusting my hands on the bar so that the weight is on the outside part of my hand. Still no luck. Any suggestions??? Raising handlebars maybe?? not sure
Then, that leads to my neck. It feels ok a little while after the ride, but during it...around the 20 mile mark i notice myself putting my hands on top of my handlebars to sit up straighter so my neck won't start hurting. By then, it normally hurts either way, but riding like that doesn't hurt as much. Is that a handlebar issue as well?? Maybe my seat?? I do have a male's seat on my bike...but, it's not tilted forward to put all my weight on the front (like most females do). Is the neck stiffness something that you get use to??
My lower back is pretty strong but today for the first time it got a little stiff too...can't imagine how'd it feel going for the 50miles I'ma try for next sunday. Is that normal too??
Appreciate any help or suggestions thrown my way. OH YEAH...after that wipe out on the wet pavement...i was looking for a tire that has good traction in wet environments too. Heard a lot about the Hutchinson Fusions Comps...?! One thread i read about them was some guy doing up to speeds like 42 mph down a mountain in the rain. No wipeouts....that true?!? haha...scared to find out after eating pavement at 10-12 mph on a wet road. Wasn't even raining anymore!!!! I purchased the Equinox tires by Hutchinson. Any good?? Michelin has a good one too right??
